The highly-anticipated PlayStation 3 sequel to Guerilla Game's Killzone is to be officially unveiled at next month's GDC, CVG has learned.
Well placed US sources have revealed to us that the flagship Sony shooter will be shown in full glory at the San Francisco event, perhaps even in the form of a playable demo.
As well as its high price point, the PS3 (like most consoles) has faced criticism for a lack of really high profile, compelling games which make it a 'must buy' and the big reveal of Killzone 2 will also form the spearhead for a raft of new PS3 game announcements at the show, which Sony hope will drive PS3 sales through the roof during the European launch and beyond in the big lead up to the all- important Christmas 2007 market.
SCE worldwide studios president Phil Harrison is also due to keynote at the event, which takes place on March 5 to 9.
Killzone 2 was previously shown in video form to an impressed audience at Sony's E3 2005 press conference, but the video was later revealed to be a pre-rendered cut-scene, and not in-game graphics.
CVG will of course bring you all further developments live from GDC next month, and hopefully get hands-on impressions with the game itself. Stay tuned.
What do you mean it was pre rendered footage of killzone 2 sony showed off, according to sony it was real time graphics represented of how the game will look on finished PS3 hardware.
Killzone 2 is going to have its head jumped up and down on by a gigantic green killing machine come the end of the year anyway, so it dosnt matter how good it might be, in the rush of the festive season, people know all about halo's gameplay, and all they remember about the first game was how crap it was, killzone 2 might be a good game when it comes out, but by sony posistion the game in the halo killer mode, its not going to very well and sony have rasied expectations of the game to new heights by doing so.
I want to see killzone 2, to see if they have got it to the target footage of ''that video'', i doubt it, but i still want to see it none the less.
Not that im going to buy a PS3 to play this game anyway, 425 quid plus 50 quid when ive got a 360 and all i need to do is spend 40 quid for halo 3, its a bit of a no brainer for me.
I hope this one lives up to the hype. I was really looking forward to the first one and ended up reeeeeeally disappointed... and if it is amazing it means they only need to release another four or five amazing games to warrent that massive price tag
This could be the boost Sony needs, they really have to start showing some killer app titles in order to justify such an extortionate price tag. On the flipside if the game doesn't live up to that 'demo' from 2005, Sony could lose even more gamers. Make or break for PS3 already? Could be.

But how do you know that Halo 3 is going to be any good? Halo CE was a good game but Halo 2 was dire IMO a total let down! I look forward to see if Killzone 2 will be as good as the video that we saw at E305.If it is then this could be what Sony need to show the world that the PS3 is worth the price and that they were telling the truth about the true power of the cell.
I have high expections of this game, even more if this is gone be their answer to halo 3.
If they have a demo it might not be a good idea too release it before they have checked out the competition. Cause the graphics etc. got to be better than halo 3. If they want to stand a change against Halo which defined and made the xbox. We will see if killzone can do the same. I actualy might buy a ps3 than. Assuming i can afford it (ps3+game+extra controller +hd cable+ true hd tv=........)
I wonder what kind of visuals they can achieve on the PS3. The playstation fanboys will preach it's CGI trailer quality no matter how good or bad it looks and the xbox fanboys will try to downplay the in-game graphics and compare bad looking screenshots with the E3 2005 trailer they bookmarked or stored on their HD for that sole purpose.
Anyway, if this game comes as close to it's target render as motorstorm did, I'm going to be a very happy gamer.

How many times do they get to try and pull this off before folks wake up to their BS?
Werent the reviews of the First Killzone crap? The CGI trailer is/was impressive though.
Out of interest what is the history of the developers? Have they got a good catalogue of critically acclaimed titles?
Apart from the original & highly dissapointing Killzone (not helped by Dualshock being crap for FPS anyway) the only other game I can think of off the top of my head is Shellshock Nam 67 which was released by Eidos on Xbox, Ps2 before Guerilla signed up as a sony 1st party dev.
That game is also very average so no they do not have a great pedigree of titles that spring to mind.
Those things being said I will be keeping my out for a high quality video & or shots of the real Killzone 2 just to see if Sony can back up all their hype & bluster.
And even if this game turns out to be good it stillwont justify the high price. And since when did Motorstorm compare to the pre-rendered stuff they showed off before I have played it & its good but not that good IMO & its also a very shallow game in terms of content on the import version.
As for Halo 3 after the first games were both great titles IMO as I enjoyed both 1 & 2 equally I do not think for a minute that Bungie are going to do anything that would drastically hurt this most prestigious of Xbox franchises & I am looking forward to part 3 & Halo wars a lot.
For anybody that wasn't caught up in the hype killzone was a good game, a solid 8 out of 10 for me but nothing on the level that goldeneye made feel back in my N64 days. If the team behind killzone 2 are as anywhere near as talented as the guy's making MGS4 then this will be a great game. MGS4 trailers have shown what PS3 is capable of visually, and it beats anything else I’v seen on any other platform. And Hideo has never lied about in game graphics when it comes to the MGS franchise. ...........so there.
MGS4 looks great, but the Xbox 360 could easy produce those visuals too. I'd imagne a version of the game will make its way to the Microsoft console at some stage like the second game did. Kojima does like to do those director's cuts after all.
i wouldnt be surprised if it turned on 360 a few years down the line..
still, even though i think the 360 could produce those visuals, i havent seen anything close to it on the console yet..
SONY said they were waiting until they had gameplay that could match that trailer, maybe they have it now. If so that might mean a late 2007 release date.
This would probably mean a grouping of great PS3 games towards the end of 07, and coupled with the expected price drop, it could be a really good christmas for SONY.

Yes but to produce these visuals so early on in the ps3's life span is great. It makes you wonder what can be produced on the console after a year or two.
pity that MGS is such a bore fest. loved the first one but just got bored of the ridiculous amount of cut scenes in the 2nd and didn't bother from then on. So little game actually passed off as something huge that it wasn't. i play games to PLAY games, not watch a movie
Okay, where to start? You may dismiss this as 360 fanboyism, but i'll try and stick to as many reputable sources as I possibly can.
MGS4 - did you see the TGS leaked gameplay videos? It was nowhere near as impressive as the real-time video (which WASN'T running on PS3 hardware, might I add, but a more powerful PC with a 7800GTX GPU, rather than the slightly disabled 7800-basic GPU the RSX is based on... i say disabled as the RSX has less pipes available for usage available than the PC equivalents. This is generally a given, considering the 7800GTX is still quite an expensive card due to the low yields of manufacturing such a complex card. But back to my point. The PC-based dev kit was used for this real-time rendering, on a closed-scene. This meaning more room was available in the RAM for higher resolution textures and so forth. In the final game (and the TGS closed-door demo), these changes really came through.
Regardless of whether you want to defend MGS4, lets just settle that subject with the fact the lead developer of the title said it would have been just as easy to produce the same real-time demo on the 360.
Moving on... (and back to the topic, infact)...
Killzone 2 - It won't look like the CGI video. You know that. If you want to deny it, go ahead, but you'll be bitterly disappointed. Do you remember what made the demo so good? It was the attention paid to lighting, and the animation. The graphics weren't actually spectacular. The camera was frantically shaking so you couldn't really focus on much anyway. Lets take into account that the amount of shaking on the camera would make the game unplayable in real time, and then the fact that no hardware on the market at present is capable of doing the lighting conditions shown in that demo in real-time, then we can safely assume it wont look like the targets. Sony do this a lot, and yet you expect them to pull it out of the bag and show that they meant it all along. Motorstorm looks nothing like it's target videos, nor does F1 06/Championship Edition (from it's first E3 showing, alongside Killzone).
Now, finally, with regards to people saying they've not seen a game on the 360 matching MGS4s graphics... Gears Of War anyone? It's merely my opinion, but I think the texture resolution and clarity is greater on gears than it is on even the pre-rendered MGS4 videos. This is partially due to ATI having better anistrophic filtering than nVidia (you may think this is picky, but it's actually quite noticeable), and also helping is the 360s larger RAM pool.
I think i'll stop there. I know I haven't made a fantastically good constructed post, and most of it should be taken as bullet points, rather than an ordered rant.
Don't build your expectations up, the Cell isn't as powerful as Sony would like you to believe, i think 90% of developers would concur the systems are both pretty much evenly matched.

Or it could be Sony's worst Christmas. Let's face it, it is highly unlikely there will be a price drop this year. Let's also not forget that alot of the games on Sony's listings are also coming onto the 360 (which will most likely have had it's price dropped by then). Let's not forget the Wii as well. It seems to have attracted old as well as young gamers. Wii Sports is for Wii what Tetris was for the Gameboy.
Let's face it, the PS3 just doesn't have the same appeal that the PS1 and PS2 had.
Moment of Truth for PS3 is nearing. I am not talking about killzone only but the entire line up they might be showing. if its another Pre-rendered CG sequence, then it'll certainly be a disappointment, if its real time, then it;ll be good; hands-on experience will be sweeter. i am sure they realize this.
the naughty dog game that was shown last year's e3 and was indeed RUNNING IN REALTIME has apparently recieved a name. its called Uncharted: Drake's fortune. the awesome trailer showed some guy in a t-shirt fighting off some militia dudes in a lush jungle environment. i guess they;d be showing the game at gdc next month. now i wonder who's drake?? could that be the guy who is the main character and seeking to make a fortune in the wilderness, or maybe drake is some guy long dead and the dude in tshirt is looking for his hidden fortune. the trailer was very cool and certainly looked to whet my appetite. see what happens.
Make or break time, failure to match the trailer they showed off and tried to pass off as what the PS3 can do will have an army of critics turn up to shoot them down, either way Halo 3 whether good or bad will demolish both Resistance and Killzone as it's far more commercial. Killzone is once again being hyped up, should it once again fall short it could be costly for the franchise and for it to be taken apart twice by the same franchise (Halo) could end Killzones some what eye brow raising status as a flagship title for ages to past.
It better looks very good ...with the likes of Gears of War and Unreal 3 showing their UE3 muscle nothing short of the E3 demo quality (or very close at least ) will impress ....
Woah, guys, am i caught in a time warp here? I have here, sat in front of me, a copy of Edge magazine... last months Edge magazine for that matter. It's got Resistance in it- a review of it. And they gave it 7 out of 10. The screenshots look ok, but definately not as good as Gears of War. Everything is really brown. And grey.
"As a launch title, Resistance proves itself to be a crisp and powerful peice of software, but not quite as robust a videogame;it's not far off how the Ratchet & Clank games would feel if they were deprived of the RPG upgrade systems, plentiful collectibles and compact, colorful worlds. To enjoy it throughout is a tightrope walk that few will fail to stray from, and one that demands you love its guns as much as it does."

Just in case you're still wondering sniper50, the "Drake" of the title is fact Sir Francis Drake. If you want to know more go to gamesradar.com and browse the 'news' area in the PS3 section - there's an article all about it there.
February 7, 2007 - Throughout the day, European websites have reported that Sony's highly-anticipated shooter, Killzone, is slated for a surprise debut at the 2007 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Though specific sources weren't named, several high profile publications have printed the story and the Internet is ablaze with speculation.
With news that big, we wanted to get an official comment straight from the horse's mouth...
"No, Killzone won't be GDC at all," stated SCEA Manager, Ryan Bowling, in a conversation with IGN held earlier this afternoon. "The time for that game is coming and we'll have new information about it in the future, but not at GDC."
The news of Killzone's GDC absence only extends an already-long deficiency in information about the title that spans back as far as E3 2005, when the game was first announced. Developed by Guerilla Games, the upcoming first-person shooter was the talk of the town almost two years ago when its rendered target trailer wowed viewers with highly-detailed wartime action.

At the end of the day, It'll never be as good looking as that CGI trailer BUT it can impress though its gameplay, story, weapons, etc. Until any REAL news comes out about it, then all we can do is speculate.
Or it could be Sony's worst Christmas.
People will buy the PS3 just cos it's new, shiny and Sony. It sold out in the US within a week so I wouldn't be surprised if Sony sold all their stocks next Crimbo anyway. The games, I'll admit, aren't the best, but then again, Resistance seems to be pretty good and a few choice racing/sports titles are interesting as well.
If Sony can get games like MGS4 and Killzone out in the next 6 months, then the PS3 will sell. But it really depends on how long the fans are willing to wait before the temptation of buying the Wii or Xbox 360 becomes too great.
Actually, did anyone ever played the first Killzone? While it was a mediocre shooter (it felt a bit rushed and unpolished), the cinematics of the weapon controlled was exactly like how it was in the trailer - which i thought was the only good thing about the game anyways. As someone said before, the graphics wasn't that good, but with correct lighting and texture, you can make a game look incredible (like how they did with Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube). Theres also a lot more action going on in the trailer and seemingly intense AI and animations. If the Cell chip does exactly what Sony says it does (and Sony doesn't have a good track record of speaking the truth lately), I would not be surprise that the actually gameplay would look quite similar to the trailer...if not this year but a few years down the road. None of the full potential of the PS3 or the 360 have been fully exposed yet anyways.
