Best rumour of 2007 so far? Wii external hard drive

Japanese report says Nintendo held a meeting and everything
A Japanese magazine going by the name of GameLabo (described as an underground fanzine, no less) claims to have information on a meeting where Nintendo bosses discussed the possibility of an external Wii hard drive.

The meat of the rumour, which has been doing the rounds on several US and European websites over the weekend, suggests that a Nintendo meeting took place recently to discuss the subject of an external hard drive for Wii.

While the story might sound a bit ridiculous on the face of it, fact is that many Wii gamers have already hit their limit on the Flash memory that comes with the console - especially if you've been downloading as many VC games as you can get your hands on.

We'll chase Nintendo next week and let you know what they say.

this rumour goes hand in hand with the other currently doing the rounds that nintendo is going to start a demo channel. what with 512mb not really cutting it for demo downloads or VC in general it would be a welcome addition tho id be happy for a firmware update that allows for saving/laoding directly from SD card as 1gb cards are cheap as f- now

meh.

I'd rather hear something about a game, or some type of way of giving the wii more memory... oh wait.
Ed the duck! on 18 Mar '07
not too fussed about the thought of a hard disk for wii. i think if u pick up one or two 2gb sd cards thats perfectly adequate for all the downloading of vc games i want...

i really think nintendo got it spot on with the sd slot and no hard drive. mayeb they could have put a 2 or 4gb flash memory in there..

Hmm while i welcomw the addition of any new chanels and demo's etc and a hard drive seems like a good idea i cant help but wonder that the wii is boarder line on the price as it is. stick another bit on for the hard drive and it starts too look a bit pricey for what your getting compared to the others (360 for example). unless there's a price drop of course.

Best rumour ive heard is a sex education game for the Wii --you can guess what the remotes used for
dandoc2 on 18 Mar '07
So how reliable is GameLabo? I've never heard of them.
BGBW on 18 Mar '07
'Fanzine' pretty much gives you all the info you need on that one.

You're in luck, i need a p**s

Just update the bloody firmware to allow us to use any USB 2.0 hard drive. Knowing Nintendo we will have to pay 400% markup for their proprietary drive.
Irish Exile on 18 Mar '07
At first I wanna say that I've the latest issue of Gamelabo and there is no word about an Wii Hard Drive in it. So it's fake news.

Beside this you cannot trust Gamelabo. This magazine is full of crap. Here are some rumors from some old issues:

1. Microsoft buys Square Enix
2. Wii launch in September 2006
3. PS3 price in Japan is 29,900 yen
4. Final Fantasy III is coming to PS2
5. Capcom is planning a Street Fighter MMO
6. Koei buys Idea Factory
7. Gamecube is Nintendo's last console
8. Super Nintendo DS Lite is coming in early 2006
9. Xbox 360 Core System will never be available in Japan
10. Tokyo Game Show (2006!) is canceled
11. There will be no Sonic game for PS3
12. New Onimusha in 2006 for Xbox 360.
13. MGS4 is coming 2006 in Japan.
14. No GTA San Andreas in Japan
15. PS3 launch at the end of 2005 in Japan
16. New Auto Modellista for PS2

etc etc lol...

I agree with the firmware USB thing. Better than paying tons of $$$ for a Nintendo brand HD.
MarcuFenix on 19 Mar '07
IMO who will really want to buy a usb harddrive for the Wii unless maybe it was a Nintendo branded one. Even so at that it seems a bit much. Update the firmware to save directly unto sd card seems a better idea for now or do both for those that would want a HDD. I for now dont think there is a need, unless there was demo downloads on the horizon but buy a hard drive just for a demo is a bit extreme!
Trevor_Compton on 19 Mar '07
It's all very well saying you can't trust gamelabo with that last of lies - but I wouldn't bloody read the thing with all the rubbish they appear to print.

Heh, perhaps the people who want to save money? Nintendo sells their official Nintendo brand 1-gig memory card for about $99 at the retail store. Right next to it, was a 2-gig ScanDisk selling for $49. The difference between the two? Nintendo's brand had a shiny Nintedo sticker on it, was half the size, and twice the cost.
