Kutaragi "insisted" on Spider-Man font for PS3

May have even been the motivating force behind PS3's shape, says the console's designer
The creative force behind the design of PS3, Teiyu Goto, has revealed how the Spider-Man font came to be used on PS3 in an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine.

Goto explained, "Take the PS2 logo - we created it to blend in with the rectangular shape of the console. Personally, I feel very strongly that the logo would not have looked right on PS3.

"If you really look at the PS3 contour carefully, it is rounded when viewing the console in profile. Rather than creating a typography with all the risks that entails, it was wiser to use the one from Spider-Man, for which Sony has the rights.

"It was also the wish of President Kutaragi, who insisted that I use this typography. In fact, the logo was one of the first elements he decided on and the logo may have been the motivating force behind the shape of PS3."

Issue 005 of Official PlayStation Magazine goes on sale tomorrow.

Yawn, how wonderful. This is how we chose a font years out of date for our dated console lol Twisted Evil

A Sony spokesman later said, when pointing out the diffferences in the competition: "Wii is only about the games; xbox360 is all about online gaming; but, only with us is it all about the font."

yeah, that logo seemed pretty much familar right from the start. couldn't pin point though why exactly. until this revelation. actually, we believe that the spiderman font for the ps3 was a fitting choice. we wonder if will see a modded case soon. lol!

Interesting comment. Slightly bizarre as Sony entered the console industry before Microsoft. Sony copy Spiderman? don't they own the spiderman font which was created for their films. So.....er...... Sony copied Sony.

EL PRESIDENTE!

its just sony being unoriginal. they even say they didnt want to risk it.... which means they couldnt be bothered coming up with a decent branding package when all they had to do was select the 'spiderman' font in word and say they designed it.

their entire advertising campagn is crazy.... i just dont get the adverts. as far as i can figure out the only message in the one ive seen is that they want you to waste money

Here we go again another chance for Microsoft/Nintendo fans to take a pop at Sony *yawns*.

As a PC gamer I am completely neutral when it comes to consoles. I am getting tired of all the "Sony hate" as of late though. I love how Microsoft/Ninty fans cry that Sony are "unorginial" at any giving time.

Answer me this fellas...what's so groundbreaking orginial about Mario these days?. What's so orginial on the Xbox 360 then? Rolling Eyes. I notice nothing different about the "big 3" this generation. It's just some seem to get away with it over others Rolling Eyes .

He was making a joke. ie, not being deadly serious and pouring his life's work into this comment, hoping against hope that he was right and no one would correct him. YOU CRUSHED HIS DREAMS!!!!!
