2K Games has confirmed details on a limited edition of Bioshock which will release alongside the vanilla edition in August.
Packaged in a nice, er, package, featuring embossed artwork, the LE will include a Big Daddy figurine (the big deep sea diver thingy), a 'making of' DVD and a soundtrack CD.
In North America, the limited edition will only be available through GameStop and EB Games, US$59.99 for the PC version and US$69.99 for the Xbox 360 version.
The limited edition is coming to the UK and Europe, but details on that are to be announced.
Bioshock releases on August 21 in North America and August 24 here.
2K has said images showing the limited edition and its contents will be released as soon as they become available.
Why are "special editions" shipping with figurines? Why is the "ultra super special edition" of Halo 3 shipping with a helmet?
Its funny that games for supposedly older audiences are shipping with plastic toys. I want the game. I want the extra stuff; the making of, soundtrack etc. But a plastic toy?
It's nice to see the US & EU are finaly catching up with Japan in turms of what we get in out LTD games, why just give us a DVD making of when we can have OST's and nice figurines. I wouldnt mind a nice faceplae with Bioshock though. *hint*hint*.
@kricca It's probably so that people buy it thinking it'll be cool, then they can charge extra for the additional postage
I like getting "making of..." and OST discs, but figurines are maybe a bit much. And a helmet? What's the ESRB rating of Halo 3 going to be? If it's Teen (likely) then who in the hell is going to have any use for it?
Call me grumpy, but I like my boxes to sit neatly on shelves.
What I want to see in a limited edition is not some crap cheapo-figurine, but art, posters, things that have some use, other than being kept in the boxes forever...
I guess everyone wants different things and you can't please everyone.
Well they had an online vote to decide what was going to be in the special edition box, and the Big Daddy figurine outweighed all other options greatly. So I think there is demand, and they've played their cards pretty much right!
heheh, being an 'older gamer', I'd probably want the plastic toy if I was going to bother my bottom with the special edition.
Usually limited editions are full of crap, unless they come with some useful in game item, then I just get annoyed with the cheap ploy to grab extra cash, only to have the extra item appear for free a few months later...
I like the soundtrack (what i voted for) and the making of, but I'll probably put the figurine on Ebay...it's just useless clutter, and it probably was kids who voted on that poll who will get their parents to buy the game for em.
I think the Big Daddy Figurine IS definitely a valid inclusion, as long as the designers produce a replica of the in-game model. This striking thing has featured prolifically in the pre-launch footage, screens, and advertising; so the audience is familiar with it. They associate it strongly with the game. So, I'm pleased it's in.
It would be nice if a "Little Sister" figurine were also commisioned. They're just so distinctive, these figurehead characters, imo.
Making of - I'm not so fussed about. I'd have preferred a poster. But the soundtrack CD could well be a highlight, given the setting and influences the game suggests; a skilled composer, i've no doubt could create some very memorable audio for.
