Wii Table Tennis drops online play

To focus on "making it the most advanced control system on Wii", Rockstar tells CVG
The Wii version of Rockstar's Table Tennis will not include an online mode, Rockstar has just told us.

The online multiplayer mode featured in the 360 has been dropped on Wii because, as Rockstar explains: "All the focus is going into making it the most advanced control system on the Wii."

Granted, the control system is very good - you can read about that in our preview right now. But we can't help but feel it's completely unrelated to the omission of online play.

Surely a good control system AND an online mode in the same game isn't too much to ask.

omission of online play = rental

What a suprise -- heres an idea for ppl -- buy a xbox 360 core for £169.99 then buy a mem card used for £7

Buy table tennis 360 on ebay for ike £5

=========

Total = £182 for a decent console and games that actually go online
dandoc2 on 24 Sep '07
table tennis online with 360 was where the gameplay was for me, none for wii, no buy for me

But if you buy an Xbox 360 core im pretty sure that you CANNOT go online anyway as you need a Hard Drive, a memory card just wont do. So not only would you not have 'motion control' in your Tennis Game, you would also be stuck without Internet play anyway UNLESS you fork out another £70 for a HD!!

So real cost = approx £280 (and you dont even get the definitive version of the game)
jaymac21 on 24 Sep '07
Yet another sign that a Nintendo console isn't taking online as seriously as it should.
Online is a huge part of gaming now. These days people would rather play online than play people in person.

As a previous poster said, better off buying a 360 core and Table Tennis for that as no doubt it'll be the better version and has the online play to keep the game alive.

Wrong. You can play any multiplayer game online without a hardrive. You just can't download any games.

Without online multiplayer, it will most certainly not be the "difinitive" version. A tabletop tennis game without multiplayer? Why even bother.
Reace on 24 Sep '07
Well that's a sale lost from me - and I was really looking forward to it. Very disappointed in their decision to drop online multiplayer, it's what made the 360 version entertaining, and if the Wii version had a better, more immersive control system coupled with online multiplayer it'd sell like hot-cakes. Sad

Always funny to see people acting like they know what they are talking about when in fact they don't. Laughing
You don't need a HDD to go online for 360. What gave you that idea? WTF... Rolling Eyes
A memory card is all you need so you can make a profile and save your game.
So all you need is;
- Xbox 360 Core - (£175 - Gameplay)
- 64MB or 512MB Memory Card (£6 - Ebay)
- Xbox Live Gold Subscription (1 month free voucher)
- Rockstar Table Tennis (£10 - Ebay)
Total = £191

Big mistake, the single player experience was one of the most irritating game I've ever played, online it was half decent.

Er then after the 1 month?? Either way you still have to pay eventually so the price would be around £220, otherwise your much loved internet feature is dead after 30 days. No need to get all authoritatian on me, i did after all say 'pretty sure' which in itself means i wasnt 100% sure. At least you give a somewhat more realistic price tho

Anyway i'll give the Wii version a go, i had the original and never got a chance to play it properly because my 360 was a joke. It would also be nice to play a sports game on the Wii that has depth
jaymac21 on 24 Sep '07
AARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!

I find this decision most annoying!

Almost as annoying as all the multiplatform EA Sports titles that are being release on Wii with either reduced online play or no online play at all... I simply don't understand why / how they can get away with it. God Damn It! My Wii arrived with so many promises about it's "Connect24" feature all neat and wireless and so far there is only one fully online game (that works, Madden doesn't count, believe me I tried) Mario Strikers... and even that has a few bugs, no actually it has quite a lot of bugs.

what a surprise........ isnt it about time a company went oooh online play and ran with it?

Well, no, because at the minute nobody's making any money from it, Nintendo and Sony offer their online service for free, so no income there, and MS are still losing money on the Xbox project (over $6 billion and counting), and consider how thinly the subscription fees from Xbox live must be getting split between all the online games so its unlikely other publishers are making all that much from it.

They're commercial companies and why should they be adding stuff that's not making them money? Rockstar have probably done their maths and thought that including an online mode is not going to increase the games sales enough to justify the extra expense of development time and resources. Remember, their responsibility is to their sharehodlers, not the gamers who play their games.

I realise this is a harsh and cynical viewpoint but hey, that's the way I see it.

That's unfortunately bang on, though the mathematics seem to work differently on the DS.

This would have been a certain buy for me with online play, now I'm not hugely interested. Bah.

BTW, "shareholers"? I've seen movies about that.... Smile

They told us this last month at the LGC.

Sort of correct apart from LIVE is the key area that MS have actually made a profit from.
MS run all the servers so that means developers dont have to pay the cost of setting up and maintaining their own servers, which is why LIVE is such an attractive prospect.
Nintendo and Sony's online service are free but require developers to set-up and maintain their own servers. Add that with the fact Wii and PS3's online system are both unproven and we start to see the real picture.
vulcanraven01 on 25 Sep '07
MAYBE... they can't fit it on the disc as they've gotta make room for an additional exclusive version of GTA that no-ones EVER heard of.... Now that would be an exciting potential use of the wii remote. Hmm.. just maybe though!

Or maybe they just can't be bottomd.... maybe Confused
justy_uk on 25 Sep '07
And with the lack of online play yet another game goes on my It Had Potential But Don't Bother pile.

Eventually somebody is bound to start taking Wii onling gaming seriously. Please?
Dajmin on 25 Sep '07
Really cannot see a decent reason for this. I'm not buying it.
RumbleThunder on 25 Sep '07
Wasn't there something awhile back about Nintendo not giving enough resources right now for third parties for online modes? If that's still the case then Ninty really need to stop being so greedy, unless they've got reasons to like the wi-fi generally being really buggy right now.

That can't be right, EA have released Madden 08 for Wii and it's online right?
AlbertStoots on 25 Sep '07
at least brawl's now confirmed to be online. also EA's heroes 2 will be the wii's first big online game (32 players). it seems odd that hardly any wi-fi games have been released yet on the wii. also battalion wars 2 was gonna be the first game with several online modes has been pushed back from its september 07 release date to 2008! maybe nintendo needs to sort out its wi-fi service before promising a wi-fi console, let's hope their working on it, before mario kart comes out next year. if they're to take online seriously they also need to release a wii voice-chat headset, and get rid of mii and wii codes.

Ah, damn forums and their lack of spellchecking Razz
Chris_Eals on 25 Sep '07
Actually, the back of my copy of CRACKDOWN says I need a hard drive to play online multiplayer - to be fair, I hvaen't tried it without it, but there are quite a few 360 games which state that you need a hard drive for online multiplayer. LF.
luissnfrancis on 25 Sep '07
As you can see, the lack of online games is not Nintendo's fault. When game developers are going to make a console game, they've always been able to expect the same thing from the process. You've got a gamepad with some buttons. Making the game pretty is more important than making it smooth and bug-free. Everyone working on the project knows how this process works and what to expect from the development process.

Until now. Nintendo throws them a curve ball by putting more emphasis on control than graphics, and now developers are finding themselves unprepared to handle hardware that's advanced in a way other than graphics.

You dont know anything mate - you can go online without even a memory card ---Let me guess you hate the 360 because you cant afford the set up so you buy a rubbish console anyway with no decent games -- table tennis came out on the 360 over a year ago and it was rubbish now youre getting a crapper version on the wii without online play ---hmmmm i can see why you're so excited
dandoc2 on 25 Sep '07
When smash bros comes out nobody will want to play anything else online anyway. However it is starting to p**s me off that nintendo think they can survive this generation of consoles with s**tty cooking simulators and mario party Mad
