Sony knows you want in-game XMB

Platform holder acknowledges demand for in-game integration of the PS3's cross media bar, looks like it's coming
Sony Computer Entertainment has acknowledged that in-game integration of the PS3's Cross Media Bar (XMB) is one of the console's most requested features.

Speaking to ShackNews, PSN boss Eric Lempel told said that in-game integration of the XMB is thankfully high on Sony's priority list.

"We are looking at a number of enhancements related to accessing some of the XMB features during gameplay, including messaging your friends," he said. "While there's no timeline to announce at this point, we've heard loud and clear from consumers that in-game XMB access is one of the most requested PS3 enhancements."

At the moment there's no real way to access PSN friends lists and messages without quitting into the PS3's main menu. Hopefully that should change in the future.

It has to really. Xbox 360 has been doing in-game messaging and matchmaking since it Xbox 1. It's not like you didn't know it was a popular feature.

It should have been in from day one! It's criminal that it's not been included in an update this year!

i'm glad they've said that they are working on it, but i can't shake the feeling that we won't see it until late 2008

iv'e got to say i have no idea why they left this out. i miss it so much on cod4.

Eh? Xbox 1 did not do that! Big Fat Liar CVG Staff!
wildhook2 on 14 Dec '07
It should have been done already. It wouldnt surprise me if we see it around March 08 making it a full year from UK release date. They must be having problems with it as i remember it being included on a PS3 promo vid somewhere well before the launch so it was removed for a reason. Its the only thing that bothers me with the ps3 now. Quitting a game to go and read messages is a joke.
CAPSLOCK on 14 Dec '07
Don't know if anyone has spotted but Singstar lets you access the message features and you contact list on the xmb while in game

When did sony add this feature?, the 360 does a terrible job on my chimps scotum

Gamers wanted 'rumble pads' too from day one, but Sony knew better. Rolling Eyes If only the PS3 side of Sony was headed by some one who actual gave a damn about games, the PS3 would'nt be the joke that it is now.

Actually the Xbox did have ingame messaging and matchmaking. I could invite someone playing Fable to come and play with me while playing Halo 2 or something.

I'm not really sure what problems people have with their PS3s but the only problem i have is the in game XMB access. I havnt missed the rumble pads at all. I'll probably get a Dualshock controller eventually but its not like having a Dualshock will really make a massive difference to how much fun the games are! I'm probably more impressed by the fact it comes in white rather than the fact it'll vibrate now and again!

As a new PS3 owner, I really miss the rumble. It really helps with the immersion of a game such as kick back when you fire a gun, driving over different terrains etc. So yeah, it's a big miss for me and I would have much rather taken rumble over this tacked on motion senor lark...
Back on topic, even though PSN is a free service, it's features such as this that are expected. Like someone said, this was done last-gen on Xbox 1 so to not have it on PS3 is a joke.
I'd also like to be able to play my own music while playing a game. It's avfeature I use alot on 360 when playing driving games.
vulcanraven01 on 14 Dec '07
Well, it just goes to show that when it comes to these kind of features and such, Sony aren't quite up to scratch yet - but no fret, in time Sony will deliver the goods and beyond I can say that for sure ExclamationVery Happy

So what would be the point of you getting the new Dualshock if you think so little of it.

Driving and FPS games certainly do benefit from a little rumble. It doesn't convince you everything is all of a sudden real but it's a worthwhile subtle difference when used correctly.

But then this is surely obvious

Na sony couldnt make rumble controllers because a patant already out for the tecnology meant they would have faced a lawsuit if they had. This is the main feature i want for my ps3 but for the love of god make it so i can listen to my music and change my settings / look at my pictures please!
rak49 on 15 Dec '07
meh..if it happens,it happens,i play all my games online on my 360...the only games i want for my PS3 are single player games like MGS4 and FF13(and no i am not interested in the online part of MGS4)
metallicorphan on 15 Dec '07
I hope they get this sorted for games like GT and Metal Gear online. I still can not figure my bluetooth headset out for warhawk or any game for that matter haha! Will do some research in a min Twisted Evil

I must say i do miss playing my own tunes aswell to like driving genre game, makes me go back to the 360 since my setup rocks!
jacobster on 15 Dec '07
As far as i've heard (somewhere can't remember) the problem is a lack of main memory

The 360 has 512mb shared so can be used differently depending on type of game ie: 128mb graphics, 359mb for the game & 25mb for the background bits (chat, desktop etc)

The PS3 has 256mb graphics fixed & 256mb main fixed
ie: 256mb graphics, 231mb for the game & 25mb for the background bits etc (if these were included)

This would probably result in even more framerate issues than you get at the moment, Sony probably know this and is the reason it was left out

(these consumption figures are a guess and not real so quote me on them)
sonne jim on 15 Dec '07
Well it's not like you'd be playing the game while looking at the XMB. The game would likely be paused in the background anyway, unless it's online.
potnoodle1 on 15 Dec '07
Nintendo should allow access to the Message Board from the home menu on Wii. Pretty as the blue light is, it's kinda annoying seeing it glowing away telling you there's a message that you can only get my quitting the game.
AlbertStoots on 15 Dec '07

You still miss the point, whether or not the game is paused, running, online etc the chat program will still be running in the background using main memory, this equals less memory to run the game. Rolling Eyes
Like i said this will result in a drop in performance
(more framerate issues)

Sony,"The games are coming, rumble in coming, the in-game access is coming".Same old song and dance. How long do they expect us the swallow the BS?

STUPID SONY!

It is fair that you have a problem with Sony's decision making and comical lack of foresight. But these things are actually coming... so BS was a little harsh.

I'm tired Sad
