Sega has confirmed the name of the first Aliens games, which is the squad-based first-person shooter in development at Gearbox Software. Colonial Marines will arrive on 360, PS3 and PC in late 2008.
Players are part of a United States Colonial Marine squad that goes off to face the alien assault we all love from the films.
The story has been penned by "renowned writers" Bradley Thompson and David Weddle. The game will retain the atmospheric look and feel of the original films.
There'll be a story driven single-player mode and a four player co-op mode. In this mode each player assumes the persona of a Colonial Marine and will have "a distinct role to play in the completion of every mission," says Sega. More multiplayer modes will be revealed later in the year.
No shots with the announcement, which we're getting tired of now. Especially as scans from a US mag hit the web earlier in the week. What would you rather look at readers? Grubby scans or lovely, official images? Thought so...
Sounds f'ckin AWESOME! I'll be interested to see how they handle co-op though. Survival-horror is one of the genres where co-op usually DETRACTS from the experience because once you're going through it with a mate(s), it's nowhere near as scary.

If it is played out right I think it could be pretty tense still. I think the overbearing power of the creatures you face means there is not a great deal of safety in numbers. Depends how the death mechanic pans out.
With very little music and subtle use of sound I can really see this being done well.
I hope to god they can pull this off. Alien Trilogy was the only decent Aliens game I've seen but still it lacked something.
I think mainly it was the fact that a few of the levels looked fairly samey and it seemed that they only took inspiration from the films as I saw no recogniseable areas from the films or the areas that were from the film didnt look like it did in the films, although that may just be me.
I hope they have a level in a giant spacecraft too.
