We didn't quite know what to make of DICE's kung-fu combat game Mirror's Edge when it emerged in magazine previews last year, but after reading the latest eyes-on reports we're absolutely excited - insultingly so.
It's being described as a 'first-person free-runner', basically putting you on the top of a skyscraper and pitting you against helicopters, snipers and an endless army of armed goons.
Set totally in first-person, it's supposed to be visceral as hell with melee kung-fu combat taking centre stage (guns only last until you've fired the clip) and Assassin's Creed-style free-running across buildings making for some incredibly stomach-churning leaps across buildings.
This sort of gameplay hasn't really been pulled off in first-person before, but there are already signs of some particularly smart design choices by the Battlefield dev; for example you can see in the screenshots that you're path across the map is almost mapped out with colour-coded cranes and buildings.
It looks fantastic - let's hope DICE can pull it off.
If its looks that good when its released i'll eat my toe nails
Don't you do that anyway?
This looks incredible. It's also refreshing to see a game that's bright and vibrant. Makes me want to go on holiday.
Yeh, seems to have a Burnout Paradise vibe to the graphics; very detailed and crisp. Looks really interesting. Nice to see a developer trying something a little unique. I wish them luck.
maybe they'll implement a right analogue stick for kung fu, like fight night, that combined with different button presses perhaps who knows. either way it looks superb. lets hope for a decent framerate/no popup/or slowdown issues. it could be awesome. nice to see people trying something completely new and inovative
That looks absolutely amazing, and sounds like a fantastic premise. First person free-running and kung-fu in environments that look like that? Yes please.
It looks good but sterile. A deliberate choice most likely.
I really am looking forward to seeing how this turns out. I really have yet to see a major jump in FPS since Quake 2... Not that it has not been bettered but largely the format has remained fixed. Hopefully it will address some of the things I don't like about the genre without being awkward and unplayable. I said elsewhere if it turns out right games like Oblivion could see a makeover too.
My mate is the producer for this game. from what he has been telling me, if they can pull this one off it will completely change what people expect from FPSs.
