Sony has confirmed that a firmware update, version 2.20, to release in late March, will upgrade the PS3's Blu-ray movie playback capabilities to the new Profile 2.0 standard.
What does this gobbledegook mean? The biggest new feature of Profile 2.0 is BD-Live, which adds interactive features such as downloadable video content, ringtones, games and more to Blu-ray film discs.
The first films with BD-Live features are scheduled for release next month. BD-Live Titles apparently give you access to "a variety of downloadable content, including bonus scenes, shorts, trailers, subtitles, ringtones that can be sent to mobile phones, images, and more."
Sony says you can also look forward to playing "interactive movie-based games [that] can pit players who are sitting in the same room, or are across the world and online, against each other."
The update will also add the ability to easily transfer music and photo media to be passed directly back and forth between the PS3 and PSP.
Here's a checklist of other features to be added in firmware 2.20 which, on the not-so-positive side, doesn't contain in-game messaging:
"Resume play" will enable PS3 to start playing a BD and DVD video at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed.
"Audio Output Device" will be a new Remote Play setting, enabling PSP to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3.
PS3's Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser's view speed will be improved.
DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.
"Mosquito Noise Reduction" will be added as an AV setting in the control panel of the DVD/BD player for improved movie playback.
This sounds really good. Whoever complains about Sony not working hard is wrong. Also, brings us 1 step closer to the fabled xmb! I like the sound of the interactive online games + downloads. Cool.

ah cool, ive just started watching Blue-rays as I just got a 1080p tv, blew me away. Very pleased with them kicking the 2gig limit on Divx to tho I tried a high def episode of lost last week and it didn't work. Maybe it was in a different format but does it play high def divx vids???

Chances are that it was an x264 mkv file which the PS3 will not play, you need to run it through a program like mkv2vob or GOTSent which will change the video into a PS3 friendly container. It only takes a few minutes as it doesn't actually reencode the video.
mkv2vod will keep any 5.1 sound intact and output a *.vob file (Slightly larger than the original)
GOTSent will reencode the audio losing the 5.1 audio and output a *.mp4 file (Slightly smaller than the original)
mkv2vob is the better tool IMHO, but it does sometime transcode the video which can take a while, most of the time though it works in minutes.
I'd argue that all PS3 firmwares are "huge"... in size... at over 100 MB each!
I can't see why this one is "huge" particularly as it's more focused on bringing the PS3's BD specs up to date and there's very little there for the gamer. Obviously, I'm happy that I can finally access the online MOLOG feature on my Saw IV BD but Sony really should be prioritising things like the ingame XMB for reading and sending messages, etc., because this is surely only going to be of benefit to a small number of PS3 owners who watch/buy BD movies?

I have a 1080p bravia and the scan is jerky on my tv as well. Sadly these updates wont improve the quality of the actual playback, which if you compare to some stand alone players isn't the best. And yes i have tried a few,

Thats what aggresive marketing by the Blu-ray camp and very poor marketing by the HD-DVD camp does. HD-DVD died simply because of horrendously poor marketing, they only have themselves to blame, shame really 'cos I always thought HD-DVD was better.

100% behind you there, in my opinon HD-DVD was a much better format, it had it all region free (so cheaper imports) interactive menus & online features, dual combo disc's, but nobody knew!!, i mean if they'd marketed it right, when someone went to buy the new harry potter film it would of been right do i buy the DVD 15.00 quid or buy the HD-DVD combo for 18.99? which has the DVD on one side & the HD ready for when i upgrade!?... but sadly nothing was put in place to push HD-DVD & to no suprise it died. I'm gutted Blu-ray has one 29.99 for smoking aces in Zavii???... get f**ked!....sh1t film as well!....*grumble, grumble*
sounds like a good update for the movie / blu-ray buffs out there.
And since theres still no decent games around for the PS3, I guess its sensible that Sony concentrate on enhancing the bluray features at this point ;-p

Go take a look at the 360 forums guys. DAEDALUS79 and HOLLYWOOD are on there too but they ALWAYS make positive and defensive posts regarding the 360. Again it always seems the majority of Xbots come onto PS3 threads to donothing more than slag the PS3 off.

I Love the way that posting a negative comment about the ps3 makes me a fanboy. Ive paid good money for a ps3 and so believe i have the right to say what it think about it 9same goes for the 360). Anyone who reads the forums will see im completely unbiased when it comes to games consoles, i like my 360 more but thats because i think its a better system, not because Microsoft made it. If i was a 360 fanboy why would i be spending Ł60 on GT5 and a logitech steering wheel for my ps3 next week ?

Actually i never "Defend" the 360 unless i believe what the person is saying is wrong. It doesnt help that most of the sony fanboys here are fickle little s**ts who care only about the name of the console.
I only post on this site every now and again but from what I've seen the PS3 fanboys far outnumber the xbots.That is the legacy of the PS2. I'd regard myself as a fan of Playstation for the simple reason of it being consistantly excellent. I'm far happier with the quality of games so far in its lifespan than I was with the PS2. Capcom have f**ked up. I think that had they left DMC4 as an exclusive on PS3 and left Lost Planet exclusive on 360 they wouldn't come across as the Japanese EA. They seem to have become money hungry pimps. Sqeenix however have the right idea. Release The Last Remnant on both while having both FFXIII and FF versus XIII "exclusive" to PS3 until they see how TLR does on 360. God knows they need a great JRPG because I've played Blue Dragon and Lost Oddysey and in all fairness I would rather stick in FFX, FFX-2 ,FFXII or DQ-TJotCK to get my fix. And they're PS2 games but still show how far the 360 has to go. That being said, this Blu-Ray update, I can't wait for for FF7:AC Blu-Ray to get the themes for ringtones. What about One Winged Angel? Class! Then we've got the Capcom Resident Evil one.Deadly.

try changing the bd settings. i think it is under "cinema settings 1080p" this should change the scan speed to 24hz to match the disc, rather than ps3's 60hz.

Considering my PS3 is only used as a Blu-Ray/DVD plater atm, those are some nice updates to look forward to. However, I must echo previous posters views, I wish Sony would put as much effort and dedication into the gaming side of PS3 as they do the multimedia side...
Great, now where the bleeding hell is Shivering Isles though. I don't watch movies on my PS3 often, and couldn't care less. As long as it can blay DVD's and Blu-Ray i'll be happy. Fix the games side of things first, then worry about Blu-Ray
I'm just bloody-well p**sed it's took them 4 months to transfer Pain form USA to Europe, they haven't done it with Shivering Isles yet, that there is so much more PS3 fans want, but instead we get to update out Blu Ray players.

I for one and glad to see Sony continuing to develop the bluray side of the PS3 (which they always were going to do as it is their best chance to establish the BR format). However I do agree on a number of posts regarding the playback, as good as it is, there still some improvements to be made, that hopefully a future firmware will fix. What I am most interested in however has been missed off the update again, and that is the full support for the HD Audio codecs, which cannot be played over bitstream and Linear PCM does not carry correctly. It's all well and good having BR's with the likes of TrueHD and DTS HD Master, but if we cannot get them processed out of the PS3 and onto our amps (I have an Onkyo 805 which fully supports them) then it is simply not good enough. Come on sony lets have the HD Codecs over Bitstream. I appreciate that most people don't care about this right now, but since this is a comment board on the profile 2.0 update it seemed like the right place to moan

ive just downloaded 2.2 and there seems to be a rather big bug on it. Whenever i close the intenet browser, the screen just freezes. Anyone else with similar problems?
ive just downloaded 2.2 and there seems to be a rather big bug on it. Whenever i close the intenet browser, the screen just freezes. Anyone else with similar problems?
nope, theres a slight delay less than 1sec, but i cant remember if that was there before the update...
