Project Origin - nasty in latest shots

Glad we've just finished our lunch
A new dose of Project Origin blood and horror is on the table today in the wake of a gameplay trailer that we ran toward the end of last week. Take a look at the latest screenshots.

Project Origin, if you didn't know, is Monolith's unofficial sequel to F.E.A.R. and returns us to shock and gore and slow-mo gun battles.

It won't just be soldiers you're up against, either. Flesh-eating loony-men with heightened strength and a penchant for writing spooky messages in their own bodily fluids will ask for gun-based attention, as will ninja-y assassins and the ever-welcome big, stompy robot suits.

Excitingly, your entanglements with such folks are freed from the confines of corridors and warehouses - Origin plays out in a paranormally devastated city. The open spaces should mean a less linear and more tactical journey of killing.

More on Project Origin here.

Even though the engine is starting to show it's age, the 'open' levels will still feel like corridors and linear, I'm actually looking forward to it. I liked the original and even the expansions (even though no-one else seems to). Hopefully it will have much the same close combat styles as them.

Yep, people are always going to demand more 'open' games when they aren't needed for the style. FEAR fits the close combat and linear style and so should continue with that in Project Origin. However, more original environments would be welcomed.

Looking at those screens, it really is starting to show its age, particularly the first one. Having said that, the modeling is still great, especially that monster who has grabbed the player, I hope that isn't a script sequence. If the enemies could knock you down and you had to get them off you it could make for some scary gameplay. I always felt the problem with the original was that the scary bits and combat bits were very separate, meaning during the scary bits you knew there was never going to be any danger. It does seem as if this game is going to be getting away from that.
