PlayStation 3 outsold Xbox 360 for the third month in a row, but the Nintendo Wii overshot the combined sales of its rivals, according to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter.
Ahead of March's NPD Group sales data, due to release this Thursday, Pachter forecast PS3 sales of 365,000 units, edging out sales of 310,000 for Xbox 360.
In a Monday investor note, Pachter predicted that Nintendo will come out on top for yet another month, with Wii sales of 700,000 during March's five-week retail period.
Pachter believes that Wii and DS supply improved during the month, adding that the Wii supply situation has "made forecasting unit sales quite difficult." Pachter said a weak US dollar may have driven Nintendo to give a larger piece of the 1.8 million Wiis produced monthly to Europe at the expense of the US market.
"However," Pachter wrote, "we believe that European supply has caught up with demand, and think that the company likely shipped the U.S. its "'air share' in the month of March, particularly in light of Nintendo's need to support the launch of Super Smash Brothers Brawl."
He said that Wii demand is "expected to outstrip supply well into 2008."
The simExchange virtual stock exchange forecast Wii sales of 593,000, and PS3 and Xbox 360 sales of 301,000 and 296,000, respectively.
Software will also likely the be the big story for March, as Pachter expects console software sales of $850 million, a 47 percent rise at US retail.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl from Nintendo is expected to be the top game for the month. The title, released on March 9, sold over 1.4 million units in the US in its first week. Pachter believes the title sold 2 million during the entire month.
Other top sellers may include Army of Two, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Major League Baseball 2K8 and catalog titles such as Wii Play, Guitar Hero III and Rock Band.
Right on and this rate of going it will be 2050 when sony passes out the 360 so whats the point of this. GT and Mario Kart are the main game out at the moment so sales of both consoles are bound to be high
More people own 360s so the demand has gone down which is hence reflected by the numbers, the PS3 has recently dropped in price (more people can afford it/ looks like a more appealing price.) and a few decent games have been shaping up and have release dates and as there are less PS3 owners demand for the console is relatively high.

And the fact that its got some awesome games out for it? *Cough*Mario Kart*Cough*. Hell, thats why i bought one.
Must admit I just invested in a Wii due to games like Mario Kart and Brawl being available. Already got a PS3 and 360 so that's me done and dusted.
As for this article, much like other people have said, Wii and PS3 are bound to be better sellers at the moment with games like Mario Kart and GT5 being released. I think it won't be until GTA4's release until we can actually make anything of console sales.

OR - from a less whiney negative angle - we could see 3 powerful consoles with perfected (or at the least bettered) motion control
Yeah, but which format is proving to be the most profitable one to develop on? Lets see some sales figures for third party games, that might give us a better understanding of where the real money is.

This would only be relevant if all three consoles had been released at the same time. The wii has great sales because it appeals to the so called "non gamers" and also because its most peoples 2nd console.

I will never understand why the Playstation Generation can't understand that graphics alone do not make a great game (or console) The Wii is doing so well as it has a unique way of playing the games, which works. This means that true Gamers are buying it in large numbers and also means that non-gamers finally have a console that they can just pick up and play (unlike many of the over-complicated controls that have been developing ever since the PS arrived). I would love the Wii to have both great graphics and great controls but in order for it to be cheap and accessible to everyone they have chosen not to compete with MS and Sony. We all had to start somewhere on games. I started on Pong which lets face it, was not a graphical powerhouse, but it was very playable and at 4 years old I could play it with ease. Many people on these forums would have started with either a PS or PS2 which were both also underpowered copmared to the competition. My 360 gives me great online FPS games like COD4 but for true gaming my Wii wins hands down!

I see a new world order where Xbox fanboys must live in caves, their only heat that which is generated by the console, their only solace the loud hum of the disc drive, living in the blind hope that Master Chief will one day return in what will come to be known as Halo 4, and the inevitable 5, 6 and 7. But by then it will be too late for the 360. By then it will be 2011 and new consoles will be released. And thus the cycle will start anew...

Well done for saying it 'tekken-PS3' the 360 and PS3 are actual next gen consoles. The Wii is a gamecube with a new type of controler on it. Yes the controler is new and intresting(somehow though I have no urge to try it out) but if MS and sony decided on the next gen to copy nintendo then we will have no advance in graphics or sound instead we will all be waving our arms around trying to play COD7 in a very imprecise way. The wii sales just prove you can sell anything to the masses if you have clever marketing.

So, you haven't actually even tried the Wii Remote/Nunchuk? - that kinda makes your point null and void, how can you criticise a console that you've never even played?
All this nonsense about it being a Gamecube is utter rubbish - the Wii is a very good games console....maybe you prefer pretty graphics, but there are a lot (most likely the majority) that will take gameplay over anything.
Admittedly, the Wii has been slow to get its big titles out - but, we're starting to see that change and even third-parties releasing some pretty damn good games for it (Pro Evo, No More Heroes, Bully etc)
Maybe you should give it a try? - you never know, it may surprise you!

i think its good that nintendo have at least tried to be innovative, but at the end of the day i find the motion controls to add very little to gameplay
until were controlling games with our mind/whole body i wont feel the need to use anything other than a traditional controller
as many people have said before theres been many peripherals before that make us feel like we are more involved with the game, and just like these peripherals the wiimote can only imitate so much
a gun, and some kind of bat/sword thing
maybe a steering wheel, but everyone knows that the wiimote is not nearly as accurate as we would like it to be.
i feel that the other consoles have been more innovative anyway with things like a robust collection of content to download such as old updated games, original games, demos and movies, and generally the other consoles are much more online friendly
yea sure PC had access to all of this a long time ago but were talking about consoles
only reason why 360s are still shifting is because they are Ł150. budget bargains!! they devalued them too much (probably deservedly) now there seen as a bit of a toy. (was never as serious a console as the ps3 in the first place)

Sorry 'Parmaviolet' I just do not like the whole idea of the wii remote. I don't like cutesy graphics, not keen on platform games so nintendo has never appealed to me. I just think that a traditional controller is more accurate for the majority of games. Yes also I like pretty graphics, somehow I don't think GT5 prologue would have been the same game had it come out on the wii. I will stop blah blah blahing 'for now'.

GT5 Was exactly the same game on the PS1! It has not changed since I got bored of GT2! The graphics are better but the game is the same. You clearly are not a true gamer as gamers value gameplay over anything else. But hey I don't really care too much as you are the one loosing out. It just annoys me that people will take a pop at any of the new machines without even playing them! In 27 years of gaming spanning across almost every system ever released I have to say the wii comes a close second after the Amiga when it comes to the amount of fun I have had. My 360 just plays the same old games that I have always played but just makes them look better. Perhaps you should open your mind a little.....

...OK, point taken about traditional controllers - but, it still means that you're really not in a position to dismiss the Wii as 'gimmicky' until you've actually tried it....I was sceptical about it at first - but things like Resi4 show you that the Wii is far from just being about 'cutesy graphics' and 'platformers'
Once again - you should give it a go...if you don't, you're missing out on some real gems....they may not look like GT5, but that really doesn't mean they aren't great games - are some of the legendary titles produced in the 80's & 90's now deemed rubbish because devs can now squeeze more graphical power from the different platforms?

Well I agree with some of what you say. graphics for example dont make a good game. But neither does a novelty controller. I'm not saying there is nothing in motion control but there is nothing in the wii.
I find it a little offensive that you say "true gamers" are loving the wii. I am a real gamer. Hell I'm even studying it at uni so I feel im a pretty hardcore gamer and I can't say I like the wii at all. I've found that all the wii games I've played have controls that dont actually work and I end up flailing about and the game not accurately taking my movements as the contoller is nowhere near fast enough for games. The only great game I have played on it was Resi4. But seriously, that was on Gamecube. Anyway, thats just my opinion.
