PlayStation Day: Full Report

Direct from the O2 Centre in London
Sony's PlayStation Day has been and gone. Here's everything that went down in London town.

Sony Japan's main man Kaz Hirai was backed-up by Euro boss David Reeves as they both revealed the year ahead for PS3 and PSP.

Here's the live text from the show. Screens later tonight:

- The show has started and Kaz Hirai has taken stage. Things have improved massively since launch, he tells the audience.

- Buzz, Motorstorm 2 and Killzone 2 lead this year's first-party titles, says Kaz. Supported by MGS4 and others from third parties.

- Kaze talks about the 'ten year cycle', says the potential of the PS3's power is massive.

- Appologises for Home delay. "I will not open up Home until im completley satisfied".

- 8 Million registered on PlayStation Network. "Huge opertunity for PS, one that requires a different way of thinking". Singstar Online is key to this, and Buzz Online will follow.

- About to pass back to SCEE boss David Reeves. "Moving forward the future of PlayStation firmly sits in Interactive Entertainment".

- "Thank you very much for your time and I look forward to meeting you later." Reeves back on stage. Says we'll get to play Home later. Yeah!

- Talking lots of PR magic. Says today won't be a traditional event, will be focusing on games rather than platforms.

- As of today we have sold more than 48 million PSPs. Announces 5m PS3s sold in Europe. "We have sold more PlayStation 3s in Europe than Xbox 360s, even though they launch 14 months before us."

- Moving on to look at PlayStation's user-generated content. Says you can customise your XMB and themes, which is well wicked.

- 220,000 copies of Singstar PS3 sold, and over a million songs downloaded. Girls.

- Now they're playing a video of a Wookie dancing to Singstar. We know it prints money, can we see Killzone now please?

- Now he's going on about Buzz. Export quizzes and stuff from your PC, play them on PS3. Just like pen and paper. LittleBig Planet looks much better, Reeves still reading from a press release. We can play it this afternoon. Yeah!

- LBP creation video rolls. It's Killzone... in LBP! Lots of crazy car courses, platforming carnage, rolly balls... just bliss.

- "PS3 is first and formost a state of the art games machine", says Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 demonstrates how to get the best from the PS3. "But as we know from the PS2, it's still early days yet."

- Killzone 2 out February next year. Trailer rolls. "Our War. Their Planet". Gameplay footage mixed with a logo getting the crap shot out of it. Looks terrific still. Playable today.

- Insomniac Games pres on stage to talk about Resistance 2. Says they focused on the four C's: Co-op, Community, Competitive and Campaign.

- "Every game released these days has to have a strong community." Says Insomniac's revamping the online Resistance site with online features.

- 8-player online co-op with its own campaign, own story. There are character classes as well, which sounds awesome. Footage rolls, "this is sixth months away from being on shelves."

- Online mutliplayer footage rolls, looks much better than the first game. Lots of grass. Pretty, pretty grass. "60-players in our battles".

- "More battles, more intimacy". Seperate squads with own objectives. "We don't have sixty players fighting in one small area." Every squad gets own rival squad. Reward system that rewards teamwork, i.e. leveling up. He's off stage, Dave back.

- "Another game coming out soon is Metal Gear Solid 4." Confirms exclusive MGS4 PS3 bundle, out for June launch.

- Motorstorm sold 3m worldwide. Introduces the sequel, which apparently has "incredible graphics". Creative Director Paul Hollywood on stage.

- "We havent just upgraded the graphics and put a 2 on the end". Says it's added ultra-aggressive AI and "even more brutal racing." New island setting is influenced by Hawaii. No hoola, no Elvis... apparently.

- 16 tracks in the new game, boots up one of them. "Pre-alpha, 40% complete". Look wicked, demonstrates the fancy plant tech by driving a buggy through the jungle. Boasts about water tech, which in reality looks a bit rubbish. Racing footage rolls, need more Pendulum.

- Talk about vehicles. Nothing new here. 4-player split-screen. If he says "brutal off-road racing" one more time, we're going to mental. He said it again. We HATE YOU.

- Mr. Cheese is gone. Dave's back and he's talking about something WICKED; EA DICE's Mirror's Egde.

- EA Man Sean is on stage. Yo Sean! Talking a bit about the story, but we just want to see the game in action.

- Says DICE is going to put you in an action game, instead of watching an action game. That means you'll be able to see her legs. Trailer rolls, it'll be on PSN later this week.

- In-game footage of Faith running across a rooftop, looks incredible. We ARE buying this game.

- Dave's back. No, don't go Sean! He's talking about sports games now. Urgh. Talks about sports games, mainly motorsport and footy.

- Says Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is the nuts. Already sold 1.5 million in Europe. We're waiting for him to say "brutal off-road racing".

- Sony has teamed up with Nissan to make the GT Academy, which is a European competition that mixes PS3 racing with proper real-life motors. Mike should put his name down for that, he once got to our house from Kent in 15 minutes, the nutter.

- Now a Nissan blokes turned up to talk PR. He's got a posh voice. "I often wondered if I could make the grade behind the wheel in a real race." Says thank to the GT Academy, gamers can now find out the answer to that question.

- Every round of the GT Acadmey will be filmed and made available on PSN, says Dave.

- Now talking about footy. Says Sony and SCEE sponsors FIFA, UEFA, so they're well into it, like. Rambles on about PS3 footy tournament. We don't care, show us games.

- Talking about Blu-ray, says its doing well in Europe. BDLive lets users interact with filsm on PS3, he says. To "show the potential of BDLive," here's some Aussie bloke from Sony Pictures.

- Lots of numbers. More than 1 out of 3 Blu-Rays sold is from Sony Pictures. Introducing "exciting interactive features", Walk Hard and The 6th Day were the first to have these. From June 16th the first BDLIVE disc will come to Europe; Men in Black. That was wicked, 10 years ago (cynical hat off now), promise. Blu-ray advert plays on the big screen.

- "Exciting" BD LIVE lets you connect to the internet and play online trivia games in Men in Black. We lied about the cynical hat; this sounds rubbish.

- "Time for Blu-ray to give something back," by making the PS3 the "only console" that plays the hi-def format. No 360 add-on, then?

- Trailer rolls for GO!LIVE movie service on PSP. Looks interesting. The service will launch next month. "It's no secret that we want to launch a similar service on PS3... so watch this space".

- Talking about Singstar, EyeToy and Buzz again, which have sold over 20 million combined. This bit really isn't for us.

- EyeToy Hero coming, comes with a toy sword that interacts with the camera. Have that, Wii.

- Echochrome video. Very 'lifestyle'. There's a bloke playing on the PS3, with his missus relegated to the PSP. We do that at home. We don't know what's going on in this video, there are men in white balaclavas pushing fruit...

- Wierd music stuff over, Dave's talking about Play TV. It's going to be on the show floor tonight, and will be out in September for 99 Euros (£78).

- Coming up to the end now. "Cast you mind to Games Convention in Leipzig last year", says Dave. Says Sony has lived up to all of its promises, sold over five million PS3s.

- "This is just the tip of the ice berg," says the future of PlayStation is looking very bright. We're off to play games and bop to Oakenfold...

Don't suppose they'll be too much chance of seeing something being released this year (LBP aside... delays pending) rather than stuff that'll turn up next year or the year after.

I'm sick of being shown loads of videos of games still 18 months away from release.

What’s wrong, the guy like me prefers more games currently on the 360’s release schedule?

Are you crying, just because someone has criticised your only gaming console.

Im hoping the first sentence will be an apology for constantly screwing the pal region and giving so much more to the US region!! Especially since the PAL region is a very strong region for them!!

They need to be nicer to us and do some sucking up, for the way they have neglected the region for the last, oh about 12 years!!
Barca Azul on 6 May '08
Especially since the PAL region is a very strong region for them!!

Europe and Australia make up a small percentage of video game sales, worldwide. We're nothing in comparison to the States and Asia.

Don't think theres any need for that. If I owned a PS3 I would feel starved for content too. I hope sony have somethin up their sleeves to make me wanna buy one this year, besides MGS4 of course.

Asia's not that big either, and there's a lot more piracy over there as well.

The PAL region is bigger for Sony as they've always had a strong following there, although there are those who are sick of the contempt that Sony show them.

So wrong. Though I loath to use a website using a 'z' in place of an 's', at least this is better than your lack of evidence. Europe has a PS3 market just shy of America and more than double that of Japan. I think we deserve a lot more than what we are getting from Sony.

Why do we still care so much about the Japanese market? Most of the games produced there are never seeing the light of day here. Rolling Eyes
It's the american market that matters the most, it's where most of our games come from, and where most UK games are financed.

And if the American PS3 market is not much larger than the European one, then that's really bad news. Confused

snoop69 on 6 May '08
The Playstation 3 will NOT last for 10 years. Its at best on par with the Xbox 360 which was released a year before and even the Xbox 360 was graphically inferior to PC equivilants when it was released.

If Sony does plan to let the PS3 be their premiere console for 10 years, hopefully MS is smart enough to push a new console in 2010 or 2011 with solid backwards compatability which will be very easy given the Xbox's Simple architecture.

They could be better, there are people out there who have had enough of the way we're treated, I rushed out to buy a PS2 when they were first released, with the PS3 I'm still on the fence, if they're prepared to make us wait for decent games, rumble in the pad, and while they make up their mind what hardware specs they want to include... 5 million ps3's in europe sony need to start to listen and understand european gamers a good example would be the new ps store its much better BUT whats with the silly labels/tags which means finding stuff difficult to say the least.
Where as the US ,Hong Kong and Japan all have interfaces better easier than us its about time we got a worldwide psn store it would not be that difficult surely, come on sony of the 8 million psn users the majority are from europe so GIVE US THE RESPECT WE DESERVE
WE PAID THE MONEY GIVE US A PROPER SERVICE
Just my 2 cents.

Hence the SIGH, it's just getting old at this stage.

Dont think that a consol with faults ie rrod can be compared to one which actually works as it should before anyone says fanboy I own both but 360 has became an expensive bookend.
As for 10yrs doubt it probably working on ps4 now 4yrs top ..
snoop69 on 6 May '08
There the guy just said it, 5M, its over a 3rd for sure and pushing 40% of PS3 sales I would think.

As for games, maybe we dont buy as many, but then the market is not flooded with tripple AAA titles either, maybe we are more selective than other less........choosey regions!!

I have since Christmas got 6 games, would be 7 if I could get my hands on GTA and 7 Blu Rays, plus I buy in Euros/Pounds, not some half ar$ed weak currency, so I am giving them more profit.

Consider an average game in the Uk costs Ł40 and the same in US is $60, with the current exchange rate, they make $20 more a game in the UK!! The Euro cost is €65-70, so in $ its $100-105. Thats an extra $40 a game

So, you tell me, if Europe deserves a service as good as the US, or really, it should be better??
Barca Azul on 6 May '08

and available betas its not a lot to ask is it ?.
snoop69 on 6 May '08
Well, after that show that "will be focusing on games rather than platforms". All I can say is "Thank god I'm not stuck with just one console".
I already new it could play bluray & I've already pre-ordered Metal Gear so that means with Killzone 2 delayed till 2009 and no "Home" service until "it's ready" (again probably 2009), my PS3 is going to be gathering dust from July till Christmas, when Little Big Planet & Resistance 2 are hopefully released. Shocked
steve_2003 on 6 May '08
Its interesting that they specifically mention PS3 being the only console that will play Blu-ray.

I seriously wonder if Sony can withold the liscense from Microsoft or at least limit its liscensees from making Blu-ray addons/drives for the Xbox.

If Sony is using its Blu-ray technology against MS, I would think there will be some solid court battles ready to break out before the next console refresh.

Blu-ray has finally given Sony what its wanted for a very long time. They failed with Beta-max, they failed with MMCD(DVD), but they won with Blu-ray.

I wonder if its even legal to withold the technology from another competing company?

Who knows. This is a new position though. With DVD, a large group of companies came together and decided on a standard format. This has not happened with Blu-ray.

YES BECAUSE ITS 2009 RIGHT NOW...

PS2 was released on March 4th, 2000 in JP.

PS3 was released on November 11th, 2006 World Wide.

PS2 lasted 6 years.

Xbox 1 was released Nov. 2001.
Xbox 360 was released Nov. 2005.

Xbox 1 lasted 4 years.

I think 5/6 years is a good schedule. 10 years...No
wtfsmell on 6 May '08
VERRRRY SORRY!! 8 years going on 9 then. Think you might be forgetting that the PS2 is still selling significantly well, outselling 2 of the 3 "next-gen" consoles on most occasions. Where is this 6 coming from? Just because the next console is out doesn't mean it's predecessor is finished, PS1 & 2 are both perfect examples of that.

PS4 may well be out in 6-7 years, they never said PS3 would be their only console until 2017. Taking all this into account, a 10 year plan's not really hard to believe, especially when the PS3 has barely even started after a year.

Nothing very good to report other than:
-blu-ray won! YAY still glorfied laser-disc with all the extras taken out and costs more
-killzone 2 part of 2008 line-up in 2009!
-HAZE demo - pity it feels 6 months old and is a bit meh so-so
-XMB bar get 100s of emails a day into sony office, but we dont care
-HOME is never coming out
cheers sony, can i have my Ł425 back now?

different strokes for different folks, my ps3 is getting the same treatment at the mo as your 360 cos theres no games that make me want to turn it on except this evening when i downloaded the haze demo as i have been waiting for that for ages, 1.5 gig download, 5 min installation, all for a demo that you get to walk about 500m in.... it looks a good game but doesnt let you experience the game at all cos its so damn short even for a demo, ah well, ps3 back off again til may 23rd...

Sony owns the logo, but, like CD and SACD, it was developed with Philips.
Contributing to the development of the format were/are Matsus**ta, Pioneer, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp and Samsung.
The current Board of Directors is comprised of:

Apple
Dell
HP
Hitachi
LG
Mitsubishi Electric
Panasonic
Pioneer
Philips
Samsung
Sharp
Sony
Sun Microsystems
TDK
Thomson
Twentieth Century Fox
Walt Disney
Warner Bros.

Sony does not "own" Blu-ray.

im not arguing over a console though am i. im not saying the 360 owns the ps3 or my console is bigger than yours or any s**t like that. The wii has a s**t line up and even though i dont like it im still not attacking peoples views on it. what i was doing was pointing out that people argue over a line up completely ignoring poor line ups all round. however i did play the haze demo......very poor
