Despite doomsday predictions from industry analysts, GTA IV has failed to dampen the box office sales of Hollywood's adaptation of Iron Man, which was predicted to have its demographic swallowed by Rockstar's monster.
The warning came last year after Halo 3 was blamed for lower than expected box office numbers around its October '07 release.
"We anticipate the video game release of GTA IV on April 29 could dampen the potential from Iron Man's theatrical release on May 2," said analyst Mike Hickey.
But despite the hoopla, Iron Man has managed to earn an estimated $104.3 million this weekend in North America, the second-highest opening weekend ever for a non-sequel behind Spider-Man.
So despite the commotion from movie studios making excuses for their rubbish films flopping (cough, Heartbreak Kid), it looks like game sales aren't killing the movie box office.
Sega's Iron Man game was released last week should you care.
Had they released GTA on a Friday like most games then I would have thought that it would have had a definite impact on all movies on show at that time.
But we bought it on Tuesday and by the time Friday came along you can tear yourself away form your console to go to the movies; family; the Mrs; whatever.
Meh - I went and saw Iron Man on Sunday, and took a break from playing GTA IV. Clearly I was not alone in this either. Why are people of the impression that you can't do both?
Iron Man was really cool too, deserves to do well.
To be fair though, if you're keeping count, in the UK GTA IV sold 609,000 copies in its first day, which at £45 a pop is a lot more than Iron Man's meagre $104m (about £53m).
Some one please correct me if I'm wrong but:
£45 * 609,000 = £27,405,000
Which is in fact considerably less than the "meagre" £53,000,000?

Got the same figure. CVG's math's skills FTL...
I guess worldwide sales included GTA IV probably did crush Iron Man.

WHAT ?!?!
Next they'll be telling us that computer games won't actually be responsible for the demise of mankind.
I thought Iron Man was Iron b******s while GTA was a steal at €60.
I know they are terrible jokes but I couldnt help myself now I really must get back to work.
GTA is really, really great I can spend hours just driving around meeting 'friends' and getting into random shootouts and fights. Saints Row 2 be afraid be very afraid!
Hmmm. A games costs about 40 quid, a cinema ticket costs 7-10 quid which is cheaper. People got to the cinema in groups, the money is made. I can never get these games vs movies revenue arguments.
