CoD 5 not set in WWII?

Next instalment to be set in a "new military theatre", reveals Activision boss
The next Call of Duty game may not delve back into familiar WWII territory after all, as Activision CEO Mike Griffith reveals that the fifth game will take the series to a "new military theatre".

Despite rumours and strong reactions that the series would be returning to the over-used WWII era, Griffith revealed: "We'll bring the intensity of the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare title to a new military theatre to engage our significantly larger user base which nearly doubled last year as new users came into the franchise," according to Gamespot.

Another modern setting would get our vote (we're bored of those crappy 1940s guns and sluggish propeller-powered planes).

Griffith also revealed that the next James Bond game, in development as Treyarch, will use the CoD 4 engine, which is good news. The first good 007 game since GoldenEye? Maybe, just maybe...

I've a strong psychic feeling it'll be set in the Boer War. Hey, it's never been done before...

Or maybe the future, where Earth is invaded by aliens. Oh, wait... Confused
mooksam22 on 9 May '08
As long as its not in some stupid future setting like battlefiled 2142......
beef946 on 9 May '08
My bet... Vietnam.

Cool
Slipwater on 9 May '08
How about the Falklands...
Goona on 9 May '08
i'm seeing some wort of cold war coming out in the wash here.

they can't do a repeat of 'modern warfare' cos there's nothing new they can't add without a new DLC on COD4.

either that or it'll be the vietcong war. oh damn that would be good on multiplayer. instead of an air strike dropping bombs, oh yes you've guessed it, f**king NAPALM man! the ground would burn, the trees would burn, you would burn.

i love this idea, i'm coining it. you saw it here first activision you stealing gimps! stay away!

*whilst i was writing the above 'slipwater' stole my idea*
Slacher007 on 9 May '08
It's going to be set in THE CONSOLE WAR.
Bearskopff on 9 May '08
A new military theatre eh? Intriguing, but since it's not made by Infinity Ward I don't really care.
Waste_Manager on 9 May '08
I want Nam! A decent Vietnam shooter with a stonking soundtrack would be sweet.
funkyjack on 9 May '08
I think Nam would be a brilliant setting! Korea could be good also.
mooksam22 on 9 May '08
My bet is on The War of the Roses......

There's an idea. Place as an ill-prepared American marine and get your ass handed to you by Charlie. Laughing

VENT YOUR ANGER!
Bearskopff on 9 May '08
How about the Iraqi and Afghanistan wars, they're currently the latest and most modern wars!
Then again you might get anti war idiots protestng against the war by not buying it!
But that could be a good thing!
spooney100 on 9 May '08
I've a strong psychic feeling it'll be set in the Boer War. Hey, it's never been done before...

You know what? I'd like to see that.
JimSteele on 9 May '08
Isn't that kinda what they did in CoD4?
Bearskopff on 9 May '08
How about The 100 Year war?

(So many wars...I can't decide!)
Bearskopff on 9 May '08
It'll probably be world war 1 (WW1)a seeing though they were advertising for developers who had an interest in the second world war. It doesn't take a genius to take 'New theatre of war' and 'interest in second world war and add them together, what is new but similar???
blackholes on 9 May '08
Isn't that kinda what they did in CoD4?

No that was set in one of the (former) soviet states.
The terrorists accents should of given that away!
spooney100 on 9 May '08
what about a modern day underwater afair!! that would be awsome with harpoons and those sit on underwater bike thingies. sub attack after 7 kills.
roger4000 on 9 May '08
I'll be honest...I didn't really pay much attention to the story. Apart from the helicopter - explode - slow death...bit.

I stand corrected Smile
Bearskopff on 9 May '08
It doesn't specifically say it's not WWII. Just a different theatre of battle. Has COD done Japan/Pacific theatre yet? I know Medal Of Honour did with Rising Sun but that was bottom wasn't it?
Earthrod on 9 May '08
i feel better now that i've had my rant about douglass.

yet it says my IP address is in Swindon? i'm in Bristol?

Now shush all of you. i'm trying to watch 'Ghost in the Shell'
Slacher007 on 9 May '08
How about a WW2 game set in Africa? I think one of the missions in one of the Medal Honour games was set there, but an entire game set there would be something different.

Then again, with both Resident Evil 5 and Farcry 2 set in Africa, that continent might begin to feel at little over used Smile.
nb_nmare2 on 9 May '08
My bet... Vietnam.

Cool

im thinking the same.

i like goona's idea about the falklands as well, i dont know any game thats based on that war
Bravo2Zero1989 on 9 May '08
The cold war?

How about the Spanish Civil War?
Or the war that took place in the black sea and around the area of Greece/Turkey/Hungary just before World War 1?
Lewbyface on 9 May '08
I reckon it will still be WW2, as I'm sure they had already said they would be returning there for 5. As others have said, a new theatre of war means a new location not a new time period. I guess that means it will be the Pacific. There were Africa missions in COD2, so it can't be that. The only problem with setting it in the Pacific is that it will be unlikely that the trademark shifting of perspectives will be employed and it will be sticking with an American viewpoint throughout, unless they decide to have Japanese missions.
vandelay on 9 May '08
I am thinking Nam/Korea Jungle Warfare!!

Like in Uncharted meets CoD, that would be very cool !!
Barca Azul on 9 May '08
HAHAHA, it will be set in WWI instead of WWII. Mark my words.
palancas7 on 9 May '08
I've a strong psychic feeling it'll be set in the Boer War. Hey, it's never been done before...

That would be good, although I imagine alot of the whole "omg racism!" would be banded about.

I do think the vietnam war would be good, especially if the odds were in the enemies favour - that'd be very good. Sort of, back against your wall throughout.
level_up on 9 May '08
A new theatre eh? So we'll play Shakespeare and get to shoot up a load of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, sounds good to me.

I'd love to see off Graham Norton with a grenade.
JoWoo on 9 May '08
Its going to be set on the American Revolution of 2012, when people get sick of being screwed over by the gov't to the point of rebellion. Very Happy
distant2nd on 9 May '08
I HEARD ITS IN VIETNAM
KILLZONED on 9 May '08
cowbows and indians? or braveheart? something new and different aslong as you hold a gun its all been done before. either way it will be a runaway smash hit and fun online even if offline will be short Very Happy

Apparently IW are making this game, which means my interest just shot right back up.
DAEDALUS79 on 9 May '08
Id guess it will be a futuristic battlefield
dandoc2 on 9 May '08
ww1? My guess is something like some made up war, 10 years back.. as if there hasn't been enougb already.

Vegito70 on 9 May '08
More special forces would be good, tho' they'll probably feature Delta Force or Navy SEALs this time. Also it doesn't have to focus on any one time period either, as COD4 proved, you can jump between modern and past to tell a story. So you could have 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and the present time, all in the one game. Very Happy
ted1138 on 9 May '08
Not WWII, not WWII...

Im game as long as it isn't another World War game. Just a time that hasn't been done yet, preferably some time ahead of WWII.
CrippledHooba on 9 May '08
It's going to be set in THE CONSOLE WAR.

Yes send the fanbots out first they can be the canon fodder. Then after the pawns are destroyed then the real battle can commence. The 360 players will be ok until a RROD which in theory leaves the PS3'ers as victors, but the usual protracted development time of cross platform games will mean a no show.
lonewolf2002 on 9 May '08
they should not go back to a stupid world war game.
Magick on 9 May '08
It will be like Rainbow 6 2. Same stuff different location. You know, a DLC package they sell us for $60 with a case.
horngreen on 10 May '08
Oh for god sake.

This has Vietnam written all over it.
GeoS on 10 May '08
It will be based on the Tesco vs Norway war of 2019. After heated exchanges Tesco finally invades Norway delivering a crushing defeat and surprisingly low prices.

You will play as the character Dave Tamson who was a shelf stacker for Tesco, before being called up for the invasion force. You will also play as a Mongolian mercenary called Bill Smith, who constantly wrestles with the moral dilemmas of waging war against a nation for money, telling himself that lower priced food for one and all makes the pain and suffering worthwhile. Smile
Skullet on 10 May '08
I said a futuristic battlefield but i dont think theyd compete with halo and gears of war etc

so vietnam is probs the most likely
dandoc2 on 10 May '08
It'd be good if they did WW2 but just turned the sides around so you were the Nazis, Italians and Japenese.

The end could be an alternate reality were fascists rule the world!! would be fantastic but'll never happen. (in the game it would be fantastic - NOT in real life!)

I hope to god its not Vietnam. I just want it to be something were you're not an American ALL the time.

It would be good if it jumped from war to war, but I agree with people that say that just because they say its going to be a new 'theatre' of war that doesnt mean it wont be WW2.

They may do a Tom Clancy and turn it into an RAF/American Airforce game, or naval warfare or something like that.
fanboy on 11 May '08
personally i would like to see a decent vietnam shooter. I cant really see it being world war 1 as surely there isnt much range in terms of missions, weapons and hardware. I would still buy it if it was WW1 but it doesnt seem to logical to make a game that revolves around being stuck in a trench and charging machine guns!!!! I think Falklands would be sweet but i cant see that working in the American market. I think at this moment in time it has to be the Vietnam or Korean wars....
nobbyukuk on 11 May '08
I'm hoping for Nam. BF:V was not perfect, but it oozed atmosphere, and for those of us growing up with Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and so on, it hit home in some way.

Another part of me is hoping for something *really* different. Where you're not an american as in almost every other game. Actually, although it will prolly never happen, playing in WW2 as the germans would be absolutely fantastic. Perhaps game-developer lessons can be learned from Mr. Clint Eastwood, who did this with Flags/Iwo Jima.

It would be doable - if you do really well, and make it tough on the allies, you'll end up with a really good cease-fire agreement, and a peaceful surrender, and get to go "back to your family and rebuild homes" - I'm doubting anyone would let the germans win outright. But it would be a damned fine story to tell - the outfit of german elite soldiers, that hated the nazi-party, letting us feel the pressure of having to choose between fighting for your country and a government you dislike, or having your wife and kids shot because you didn't join up. Lots and lots of stories to tell on the other side of that war - some that might remind people that not all germans were nazis.

Kinda like what it must be like to be an american these last few years, having to apologize for your own president being a complete 'tard Smile
the688 on 12 May '08
cant wait to see cod5 sounds good but im sick of hearing people complaining about ww2 games dont forget that we would be living under a 1000 reich if we lost the war people should remember that there's nothing wrong with ww2 shooter's remember those boy's had it hard compared to todays modern warfare

lol year set it in WWI because nohing is more exiteing than months of stalemate interupted by brief piriods of gangrene
(a possible mini game perhaps?)
or somthing to do with S.W.A.T teams like that game "urban breakdown", or somthing like that. whatever it wasnt very good eny way.

My bet... Vietnam.

Cool

im thinking the same.

i like goona's idea about the falklands as well, i dont know any game thats based on that war

Back in the day i think about 1984? there was one called port stanley it was on the Spectrum, Amstrad and C64 it was crap though!(hows that for useless info). Can't really think of any "new wars" all the good (if thats the right word Confused )ones have been done. As long as it's not WW1 weapons were crap and the planes even slower! And I think possibly a slight near future setting like the Splinter Cell universe might be a good idea. I know its never gonna happen but wish they'd make it so I could play against against the 360 with my PS3 surely it only needs a special server and some ingenius coding..... Laughing
del1977 on 17 May '08
Has Anybody thought of Bosnia? i mean its amazing for sniping, tanks and all out warfare etc. Also it was the hometown of Airstrikes so maybe it was bosnians and the Muslims because of course that would then tie in with the Muslin with 1 Arm that you shoot in COD4 wont it? and around chernobly. That would be good if they tied it in with the previous game.
ed-wales on 6 Jun '08
itll be a made up war i hope that would be cool Shocked
