New PS3 firmware - but no XMB update

Version 2.35 to be released "shortly", stability improvements made
Your PS3 will update itself to firmware version 2.35 today, but it's nothing to get mega-excited about.

Sony tells us it's a minor update that will do nothing more than "improve stability of some PS3 titles".

Still no in-game XMB, although SCEE big man Ray Maguire said back in March that the much-anticipated feature is being worked on for a 2.4 update in "summer".

So, some time soon, although Sony UK is still unwilling to narrow down that time frame, and there was absolutely no mention of it at Sony's recent PlayStation Day event in London.

Patience is a virtue, we suppose...

We dont need in-game XMB, all we actually need is in-game messaging, IMHO ingame XMB is over kill to the problem of accessing friends list and messaging ingame and is probably why its taking longer than it should do.

Sony need to forget in-game XMB for the time been and work on getting the messaging sorted, possibly adding something to the PS button menu.

In Game Messaging will be in firmware 2.4 not 2.35.

Yes, 2.FOUR

yh thats what CVG already said....

And this does not fix GTA IV problems....
shiwayb on 15 May '08
T'aint a GTA IV fix. Apparently it isn't related at all to GTA. From the Playstation Blog:

"I just want to clarify that this upcoming firmware update isn’t related to GTA IV. For those of you who may still have an issue playing the game on your PS3, we have identified a solution that should resolve the issue. You can contact SCEA Consumer Services for support — their contact info and hours of service, as well as more information on this issue, are available in our Knowledge Center"
Source is here: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/05/14/firmware-v235-coming-soon/comment-page-1/#comment-60845

I don't care anyhow, it's been running perfectly for me since the patch. Still waiting on that good ol' in-game XMB though... but meh, I've survived this long without it, another few weeks wont kill me.
falloutwarchief on 15 May '08
Why does sony keep releasing these little updates every few weeks. Id much rather just have a quarterly major update, something along the lines on that for the 360.

I actually likes Sonys way better, I would rather an updated feature or a fix to be released as soon as its ready rather than waiting till a set date for the update.

But then I am the type of person that updates my software on my PC as and when updates arrive unlike my friend who often updates everything that needs it every couple of months.
Toasted_PSP on 15 May '08
I have no problem with a frequent updates. It's nice to see sony on the ball.

If Sony was on the ball then there would be no need for frequent updates.

R* already fixed it just a week after release, this is nothing to do with it

Live is a lot older compared to PSN...
JohnWalker on 15 May '08
I prefer sony's way of updating also.
The only problem I have is the massive download it has to do for any firmware update, even if it is a minor one, lucky I brought my USB stick to work today though so will set it going over dinner...
jayson_90210 on 15 May '08
XMB wasnt going to be until it moved to 2.4 or 2.5. Honestly dont be surprised if it doesnt launch until home does.

I've given up on listening to release dates with Sony as they're only ever about 25% accurate at best.

It'll be here when it's here people just have to start accepting it!
bmaindj on 15 May '08
Man, the PS3 seems to get firmware updates every other week... how about just the occasional update, I'm getting tired of having to check for these things everytime I turn the console on.

yer sure its not....
hollywood111 on 15 May '08
I'm not bottomd about ingame XMB don't know what the fuss is about. But hey thats just me. I get bombared with mp invites on gta4 now if that makes it easier for people to bother me then hell I don't think I want it at all. And custom in game music? I'd rather not. besides the sony rep said 2.4 in the summer we still have a fair bit of summer time left so I wouldn't get your panties in a bunch Laughing
gogo65uk on 15 May '08
Fixes are done as and when needed but they only add new features to the firmware on a quarterly basis.

Most games come with messaging to friends built in to the game now anyway so the need for in game xmb is slowly not becoming necessary anyway. I certainly haven't missed not having it.
jimmygoogle on 15 May '08
Have Sony assigned only one guy to work on getting in-game XMB or what? Because i honestly don't see how the hell it should take this long.
gazza_be on 15 May '08
in game music and in game messaging is all that required..no more EA Traxx or that other bs please! it makes sense that games like COD4, MGS4, resistance etc have a cinematic soundtrack but for burnout, the menu screens on footie games, basically driving and sports and even some shooters it would be nice to hear my music instead of some kind of japanese trance music, avril lavene or what ever.

i gotta say i have to give u props then - straight up. How do u find the anologe sticks on PS3 pad tho - i just cant get to grips with em with FPS games AT ALL. i tried but seriously after playing wwith the 360 pad on graw2 and rainbow, then try using the ps3 pad -oh my god. struggling is the word that comes to mind.

but i gotta say i DID turn it on last night and played 2 player Pro Evo 2 with my mate (yes the PS1 version) ABSOLUTE BRILLIANT.

i give props to Sony all day long for that game, because i still use my PS2 JUST so i can play that game still - i hate the PS2 versions and next gen

The anologe sticks have been the same since PS1 so thats prob why everyone can use them????
sbolton666 on 15 May '08
I don't see how the positioning of the analogue sticks on xbox360 or ps 1 2 3 pads makes a difference. Unless your an ape you get used to it after a period of time I can play cod4 just as well on my brothers 360 or my ps3 makes no difference. Just people picking yet again. Blaming their faults as a player on the system just coz they can.

Game fixes are applied via the Game at any time.

Features are done twice a year.

another pointless update from sony they do the same with psp there seems to be a pointless update every other week with minimal or no changes, i mean sometimes it doesnt even tell you what the update os for or what features are added because usually there arent any!
whats annoying is that you have to update or u cant go online and then the update takes about 10-15 mins.
LeonKILLER7 on 15 May '08
what is an Xmb everyone is talking about it?? am i just stupid or my tiny gaming brain doesnt understand!!!!!!!! please tell me!!!!!
dxr7 on 15 May '08
can i just note it's still spring. when have you ever known sony to release something early

any of you f**kers out there raise the COD4 map pack release a week early you can go stick it. which reminds me, i haven't plaid COD4 in ages. i feel dirty

What to you might appear to be minimal or no changes might actually be vital changes to codings. Just because you can't see it doesn't make it unimportant. It's like saying you don't need to bother with brake fluid because you can't see it working but once something goes wrong you will sure as hell be wanting to know why it never got sorted.

Oh and dxr7 the XMB is the cross media bar, the screen your ps3 takes you to on loading where you can select games or ps3 store etc this is your XMB
