While Sony's recently-announced financial results showed that the company reduced its PlayStation division losses by over 100 billion yen last fiscal year, a factor it attributed largely to falling PS3 production costs, Jack Schofield at the Guardian speculates that the platform holder may be losing double the $130 per console shipped that its internal figures suggest.
"On Sony's own figures, the games division made a loss of $130 for each PlayStation 3 shipped," he said. "Let's assume that it's making pots of money on the PSP and the PlayStation 2: the PS2 is now hugely profitable and still sells more games than anything else. These two platforms could easily have made a profit of $1.2bn in the year. In that case, the total PS3 loss would have been $2.4bn shared between 9.24m PS3 consoles, or $260 per PS3 - including any attached Sony games."
While it is not clear exactly how much Sony is losing on each PS3 shipped, the fact that the console is still not turning a profit has led company management to indicate that the likelihood of a PS3 price cut during 2008 has dropped, according to Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian, who says that Sony is currently more focused on segment profitability than increasing PS3 market share.
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter recently told Next-Gen that he expects Sony to introduce a PS3 price cut late this year when hardware production costs have slimmed to nearer the system's wholesale price.
Oh what a shame. All i got to say to that is.......GOOD. it serves them right for releasing probably the worst console i have ever had the misfortune to purchase. too busy trying to ram crappy Blu Ray down everyone's throat and it's costing them millions. As a GAMES console it is nothing short of a DISGRACE!!!

Nothing new, console makers always make a losson their systems, this is a calculated risk in order to get the install base high, so they make money on each software sale. Only Sony themselves know if the strategy is paying off.
Good job the 360 and wii are doing well, imagine what the price would be if there was no or little competition. the console debuted at Ł425 so if there was no competition it would probably still be that price or higher.
i wonder if sony will be more conservative with the PS4.
Most new cutting-edge technology tends to lose money until production costs and component prices can be cut, so this is no big surprise!
From Sony's point of view they've always stated that they're in the console race for the long-term and as long as their other products and divisions are making them profitable then I don't see what all the fuss is about.
I don't think dvd would have been so popular today if it wasn't for the ps2 everyone i knew had a ps2 and loved watching dvds on it hell even my parents bought on for their living room they still have it today as it still works. I dont think bluray will be quite that popular but I don't blame sony for plonking it inside their next games system is a nice extra for the price. Anyone that says other wise doesn't really have a clue and shouldn't be posting on here at all. and contrary to popular belief even now ps3 has some great games out for it. If sony are loosing out then they will find ways to get it back. microsoft must be loosing out too but cvg and gamesradar are too big a xbox fan to post that story. They are forever knocking sony and think the sun shines out of microsofts bottom. Wonder what they were paid to be loyal subjects.
Nothing new, console makers always make a losson their systems, this is a calculated risk in order to get the install base high, so they make money on each software sale. Only Sony themselves know if the strategy is paying off.
And here lies the problem, sony aren't selling anywhere near the amount of software that they would like. The attach rate is very poor.

You really believe that ? I don't know anyone who bought their PS2 for the DVD player. Are you seriously suggesting that the DVD market took off cos of the PS2 ?

Your'e reply is a bit childish, there are lots of playstation fans who just wanted to upgrade to the ps3 for the games.
But they have to pay the extra cost of the blu-ray drive to do this.
This is what was meant by " ramming blu-ray down everyones throats.
That is a bit of a fanboy comment. Any true fan of video games would not want to see Sony and the Playstation brand go under. Sony have done great things for the games market. I admit the PS3 has not been the success it should have been but things are looking up for Sony. People are too quick to forget that Sony have given us two of the greatest consoles of all time the PS1 and the mighty PS2. I really hope things pick up for Sony.
The PS2 was responsible for putting a DVD player into every chavs home when the console dropped in price. Most normal folk had already bought a DVD player.
When the price of the PS3 drops to nearer Ł150 it will be responsible for putting blu-ray into every chavs home.
Yes, the entire SONY corporation will cease to function due to this. They really should f**k off and let Microsoft-the great philanthropists of the gaming world- take over and provide us with more high quality products in a competition free environment. That way everyone's a winner, or do I mean everyone would be screwed? Oh yes that's what I meant.
Regardless of how much fanboy's of either system hate the other one, the competition keeps all the console manufacturers on their toes. No competition means the consumer gets shafted, so think carefully about putting a company "6 feet under".
Wow PsychoMania some pretty amusing views you have. I'm probably way better off than you anyway so I'd be careful who you call a chav. Just to cover your own sorry identity.
It came out at the right time if you ask me. Dvd's were just coming out and the ps2 was cheapest player thats how I seen it anyway.
There's truth in what you said. I would never have bothered with a stand alone DVD player when the ps2 offered so much extra.
Microsoft p**sed one or two people off with the DVD playback on the original xbox, having to buy the remote control. The other day in work I was discussing that with a colleague, and we were still kinda p**sed off about it. No one wants to be paying through the nose for peripherals to do simple tasks.
If I remember correctly there was something made of that by Sony at the time xbox was released, saying that ps2 had DVD playback "out of the box" so to speak, which also would have ahad an effect on sales. I mean why pay an extra 20-30 quid on a remote control when you don't have to?
But, I already had a ps2 at that point, so it wasn't like I wasn't able to watch DVD's at all, but I can see how gamers who just got the xbox would have been slightly peeved at it.
SONY have always been losing money on the PS3 so its nothing new for 360 fanboys to 'jack-off' about.
The article says that SONY are actually losing more than their official figures suggest. i.e. They're lying about their figures or genuinely don't have a clue how much they're losing.
I'm happy to see I paid less for my ps3 than it cost Sony; sounds like good value to me.
I still don't get the whole the ps3 isn't doing well thing; it's seller quicker than the ps2 did at the same stage despite there being 2 decent competitors and without releasing many big games yet.
Coming from a person claiming all people that use ps2 as dvd players are chavs thats pretty rich. I'm not so trivial with comparing stuff. Lol you still make me laugh 3/10 for effort.
Coming from a person claiming all people that use ps2 as dvd players are chavs thats pretty rich.
Christ, you are thick aren't you!
I didn't say that you moron, I said that when the price of the PS2 dropped a lot of chavs bought it. For many of these people the PS2 was their first taste of DVD. The same is likely to happen to the PS3 if the price ever drops enough. I didn't say that there was anything wrong with using the PS2 as a DVD player did I?
Next time read a post properly before being a snooker cue.

first and foremost dont u think thaat in itself that ur asking me for TEN reasons in the first place, but these are the reasons it is:
1. Lack of games (exclusive ones) 2. Crap online 3. Still no XMB 4. STILL no achievement infastructure set up, Home was supposd to be out LAST SEPTEMBER, WHERE IS IT?? 5. Awful joypad (compared to the PS2 one anyway) 6. Why do the games cost Ł5 MORE than on 360 in most big game releases 7. KillZone 2 stalling to come out, but yet GOW 2 is out THIS year - it's ridiculous 8. Sony obviously not concentrating on the games side of things with regard to the machine - WHY in god's name do we need a BBC Iplayer on it for???? 9. the 40GB WATERED DOWN version is comical, and just proves they finally realised the price of asking consumers to pay Ł425.00 was beyond a joke 10. Still no Dual shock 3 in UK
I could go on but can't be bothered - i ain't having a dig at PS3 owners cuz i am one myself, i am just utterly p**sed with Sony with their never ending bulls**t they keep feeding us, they say u should learn from your mistakes and TRUST me I will learn from my mistake and not buy one again. Now i'd appreciate it if peeps dont slag me off and call names (childish blah blah) cuz everything i have stated is in fact THE TRUTH AND HARD FACTS

Gow2 - uses the same engine so easier to throw out a second game to shut people up. Killzone 2 uses a new engine so more development time needed.
crap online - It plays games online thats all people want if they need to surf use a pc. And the store works well enough. I've had no probs online so I won't say its crap.
The pad? - nothing wrong with it not sure what the fuss is about
XMB - LOL don't need it ingame FFS
DS3 - I'm not bottomd about a vibrating pad.
I'm sure a few people will agree so most of them points aren't really valid.

have a good day
right, now give us a top 10 of the best glam rock bands of the 70's and while you're at it, a top 10 of the best crisps ever...I swear, some people must have feck all else to do with their time that waste it here having fanboy battles... I bet if there was a poll of who was better, cillit bang or toilet duck... some people here would love a good argument about it, I'm going back to GTA 4 for a while... you fanboys can battle it out between you....

What games would they have been early doors then? I know every new consoles starts off with just a trickle of software titles but the PS3 is taking that to extremes this time around, it shameful the lack of quality exclusives on the PS3.
That's an awful lot of money to lose out on per console. If Sony are right about profiting from other areas to keep PS3 afloat, then we might see the grand resurgence they've been waiting for.
After they've sorted out DualShock 3, full backwards compatibility, a Gamerscore equivalent and the release of Home, LittleBigPlanet and MGS4 of course.

1. i think thats an old tired agument which isnt really valid anymore. think there must be around 14 exclusives right now with 3 more coming up in the next 4 weeks. whether you rate them or not is a matter of opinion
2,3 and 4 are all one in the same arent they? but still completly valid points, sony is constantly delaying their proper online service
5. the sixaxis is quite tacky, pick up a dualshock 3 off ebay for Ł25 like most ps3 owners have already.
6. valid point, but down to retailers more than sony
7. why release it the same time as resistance?
8. sony not concentrating on games? they've probably got more triple A 1st party games in development right now than microsoft or nintendo. and they have to with the likes of valve and other companies releasing games on xbox and PC only or coming up with poor ports.
9. i find the xbox 360 core, a console without a harddrive, no wifi and a huge failure rate more comical to be honest.
im still shocked that microsoft have fanboys...its the biggest "i hate" company in the world lol i dont know anyone who actually likes microsoft
Oh, really?
And what do you think you'd be playing on now if there was no Microsoft? There'd certainly be no such thing as a Playstation 3, for a start. The Internet as we know would probably be radically different, too, and a hell of a lot less populated. Very few of the posters on these boards would have ever used it, in all likelihood.
Most of your favourite western developers would have never come to be, and the state of graphics technology and CPUs would be quite a few years behind where we are now. Most of the components that did make your low-tech modern console would also be much more expensive, too, probably leading to even less progress in the console world...
You may not like the thought of it, but gamers everywhere owe Microsoft a great round of applause for what they've directly and indirectly contributed to the lives of gamers, computer users, and pretty much everyone else on the planet who has access to electricity.
...even if they are a bunch of greedy bastards who probably sold their souls to the Devil himself to get where they are...

Excellent post. It's nice to see not everyone jumps on the 'Microsoft is crap' bandwagon, just cos it's fashionable to do so.
im still shocked that microsoft have fanboys...its the biggest "i hate" company in the world lol i dont know anyone who actually likes microsoft
The only people who hate MS are the ones who hate popular, successful things.
Its the same kind of person who likes a band, but once the band releases a music video on MTV the band "FKN SOLD OUT BRO! I HATE THAT BAND!".
Its the same people who sit in a dark room and eat twinkies while staring at a LINUX computer brooding over the fact that they're 1337 cuz they use linux and windows suxorz!
im still shocked that microsoft have fanboys...its the biggest "i hate" company in the world lol i dont know anyone who actually likes microsoft
i dont hate microsoft, but i certainly dont love them. However, i do dislike Sony for their overly expensive but not cutting edge products in every category. the only thing i own of sony's right now is a phone that was a free upgrade, i wont be buying a ps3 until the games warrant it and its price is less than Ł250.
That must be why the EU fined Microsoft a record amount for anti competition practices. As for contributing to gamers and computer users! Microsoft have bullied and threatened any competition resulting in artifically high prices for operating systems etc. I'm not sure how Microsoft had an impact on CPU's and state of the art graphics. I think IBM, Hitachi and Intel would argue that point. Apple have contributed more to the computer world than Microsoft ever will.
It came out at the right time if you ask me. Dvd's were just coming out and the ps2 was cheapest player thats how I seen it anyway.
The PS2 Dvd player was rubbish and there were plenty of much cheaper standalone players on the market. I do not know anyone that did not already have a dvd player by the time PS2 was released.

Actually, that nologo guy has a point about DVD and the PS2, although it is a matter of coincidence more than matter of fact.
DVD wasn't a video format that was accepted with open and loving arms in the East, not as much as we saw it as a revolution in the West, as they'd been enjoying VCD for years. They already had a disc format, so DVD turning up could be likened to Blu Ray or HD DVD to us.
The PS2'Ss ability to be used as a DVD player helped grease the wheels over in Japan, Korea, China etc. It's not something that can be directly proven, but it is accepted as a pseudo-fact.
The rest of this thread is full of rubbish though, as the figure plucked is a similar tactic used by the tabloids to create headlines such as "Ł20,000,000 in tax payers money sent to Polish kids".
A figure like that is calculated and translated to fit a story or a purpose. The numbers might be right, but the interpretation is twisted.

Its their own fault for packing in a bluray drive that was compltely unecessary in terms of gaming, and just a way for Sony to win the format war.
seems a bit necessary now though with MGS4 filling up a blu ray disk, rockstar b;tching about storage limitation on the 360 and im pretty sure FF13 and GT5 will also fill the disk, improving the game way beyond what they couldve with a standard dvd.
more of a case of sony thinking ahead imo, if microsoft could get away with making hd disks standard for 360 games right now they wouldn't hesitate to release a new super elite model

Makes you wonder exactly what they would have launched with if the PS3 had been out on time, and hadn't been delayed a year by the Blu-Ray component shortages...
Somone explain what effect this has on us gamers...................... What? None? Oh.
It is possible that if SONY think that they are losing too much money on the PS3 they could pull it or not produce a PS4.
The effect on SONY fanboys would be horrendous. Many would convert to playing XBox or Nintendo instead.
It has no direct effect but as mentioned in the article the likeliness of a price drop has decreased, many people looking to buy a PS3 when its cheaper will have to wait longer.

Please tell me what microsoft had to do with the birth of video games? I always thought that It was not until 1972 that Magnavox released the first home video game console, the Magnavox Odyssey, invented by Ralph H. Baer and that Microsoft were first founded in 1975?
I prefer my 360 to my PS3 as a games console but people need to see the bigger picture.
Sony are out for the long run and their just 2 years into a 10 year run. If the PS3 ends up like the steam roller the PS2 was these losses will be irrelevant.
The accuracy of the figures are rough at best.
Whether its sales figures or games sales the quality of some of the C&VG reporting can be seen as amateur.
All three current gen consoles have flaws but so what.

Wrong, wrong, and more wrong.
MGS4 will NOT be close to 50gb or 25gb worth of gameplay data.
The disc may be full, but 30-40gb of it will be HD cutscenes. The same will be true with FF13. Watching a movie =/= game content.
Don't kid yourself in believing games will benefit drastically from Blu-ray. Looking as Mass Effects cutscenes which use the game engine, you can see pre-rendered cutscenes are no longer necessary on the Xbox.
The developement time needed to fill 25gb of gameplay data would be enourmous.
360 fanboys unite and buy a PS3 and stick it in a closet. It would be the easiest way of putting Sony out of business and making them pay for all the lies they've told over the years. Now you have to agree to put it in a closet because if you buy games and Blu Ray movies you're not helping. Let me know when YOU start buying them and then I'll buy one...Maybe.
ok well first things first people, im sure i read a while ago that microsoft are yet to make a profit on either console since the release of the original xbox...and secondly no one knows (besides sony) how much or how little they are losing or if they are even losing at all....i agree with the odd post about the PS2 helping out DVD and i believe sony made a good choice with blu-ray...think about it, the PS3 was and still is a very cheap blu-ray player and because of this the price of all other blu-ray players dropped from Ł800 to Ł400, had sony not incorporated blu-ray into their console you would still be having to pay around Ł800-Ł1000 to watch blu-ray movies and yeh ok their would probably still be HD-DVD had sony not bothered with blu-ray but there isnt and sony did bother so like it or lump it.

Pre-rendered cutscenes haven't been necessary for ages. In game cutscenes are definitely the way forward. Arguably, pre-rendered scenes ruin immersion rather than add to it - going from really sexy graphics to actual in game ones which are CONSIDERABLY worse.

Please tell me what microsoft had to do with the birth of video games? I always thought that It was not until 1972 that Magnavox released the first home video game console, the Magnavox Odyssey, invented by Ralph H. Baer and that Microsoft were first founded in 1975?
I think it's more about what they did for the world of computing. Afterall, videogames consoles are computers. In which case, his post, although technically impossible to prove, is a fair evaluation.
As for the whole Microsoft hate thing, I have to agree with SunScramble on that tbh, gamers, and any computer users in general owe Microsoft big time. The problem is, it's human nature to like something when it works, and dislike it when it doesn't, and then search for someone other than yourself to blame. It's quite obvious that computers often go wrong, regardless of whose fault it is. But when you consider what computers actually do, they are pretty incredible machines, and microsoft have played a huge part in making them what they are.

RTFP
I don't recall mentioning anything about Microsoft having anything to do with the birth of videogames...
I may though, at some point, have hinted that Microsoft's various operating systems standardised, and thus vastly expanded the home PC market, and that without a standardised PC market there would be no such thing as PC gaming.
Given that it's accepted as fact around even these parts, by even the most rabid console fanboys, that the developments in the latest generations of consoles came directly from the PC market, (For some quick examples, the GPUs being variations of existing PC hardware, online gaming, the FPS, Grand Theft Auto...) then it's not a great stretch to see that with an established PC gaming scene, the current console scene would be at least two generations behind where it is now.
What do you think the games you play on your consoles were developed on? Where do you think the developers learned their craft? Chances are that 99% of the people posting in this thread are using a Microsoft OS, so without the big MS, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation.
etc. etc. etc. etc.
(Also, Kudos to Ralph Baer, a real legend, for the first home system, but let's not forget Steve Russell and co. on their PDP-1 in 1962!)
Err... that would actually help Sony
Whatever loss they make on each PS3 sold will be less than if it isn't sold and stays sat on a shelf gathering dust.
It costs money to produce them, whether they are sold or not. The machines being built now will have a fixed cost associated to them.
By buying a console you are actually helping Sony as the increased volumes of sales should help them reduce the cost per machine built.
If people did as you say then the machines that had high production costs will be sold at potentially a $230 loss. But, if people didn't buy the inital high cost machines and Sony had to reduce the price then instead of making a $230 loss (as predicted in this article) they could actually make an even greater loss.
I'm calling you out on this. Think for yourselves people. They are padding the numbers for all years of plant costs, and game development cost into those figures. Sony and Microsoft have admitted this several times already! The reason they do this is so you will feel your getting the best price, and so you will feel there is a lot of value in each machine. Do the math, if it was actually costs of individual consoles costing $260 more than they are selling them for. Then, for each console sold, they would have to sale 37 third party games for each console.....JUST to break even 260/7=37.14 the seven would be the $7 dollar license fee manufacturers get for each game that is sold publishers on the manufacturers system. Thats right a attach rate that even ps2 did not have.
They might be losing money in the US and Japan, but us Euro/Aussie gamers are propping up the company with the ridiculous prices they are charging for consoles AND games. Oh yeah, and Dual Shock 3s.
Well, I would be helping Sony out, but I bought a Wii instead. Because I like playing games on my console funnily enough. With friends in the lounge room.
Sony like Microsoft have many arm's of money making area's.The ps3 is only a year old maybe a billion down coz of it but then so is the other band camp for machine default's?It's a tough new world for console's there fighting the might of P.C. style size and graphic's for games,so what if it cost the company a billion dollars they got it.Microsoft have lost loads but made more in other ways same for the Sony lot,so the real question is this who cares except fanboys? Now I love Sony coz there bright new ideas for the future were gadgets and machines are concerned, they always find a way to make it better.( Ie.ps1 to ps2 then slimlined the psp ect.it go's on )So can Microsoft keep up what is it they do,software and xbox do they do anything else? You know T.V.'s camcorders cameras phones laptops consoles ect..So like Tesco that superbad bottom supermarket crap,Sony have it all in one place when it eventually merges it's technologys to intergrate with all it's gizmos and consoles. Then we will see the future as for xbox I dont like the controller its baddly made and hurts my wrist and fingers. So I'm playstation for life just not stupid to have it tatooed on me.
Apple have contributed more to the computer world than Microsoft ever will.
well MS make directx and that defines how GPU's are designed as it is a standard they need to conform to. this in turn affects consoles as they use pretty much the same chips as the PC so i think MS have had a hand in the whole thing for quite a while. without PC's and MS would consoles be at the standard they are today? i am not so sure as the PC has really pushed the hardware specs along with the help of Intel, AMD and nvidia of course.
apple can suck my bum though, all they do is nice design not good specs.
Pleasant suprise to come on here and actually read a thread acknowledging that MS are not some kind of hell company... just simply a company... and one that has had a direct bearing on how our current lives are lived today & certainly on how PC, gaming etc technology had evolved. Some people just hate them without really a single idea as to why. I mean christ that Bill Gates is the devil isn't he... 2nd all time donator to charties i think... how many of you regulary donate? There's more to admire than there is to hate.
This thread should have actually been about something else (Sony losing money on PS3) so i'll just shove this in to stay on topic: All companies lose money on consoles FACT. So what if their losing what Ł130. Tis p**s in the pacific ocean.
I want to say this in a nice tone...but I somehow can't seem to do that so here goes...
f**k YOU.
There.
If it wasn't for Sony, then we wouldn't have gotten so many good games to play on the PS1 and PS2. Sony is what pushed me further into gaming along with Nintendo. So if you're going to a fantard, then don't bother commenting.
