Sony has confirmed that two PS3 games, The Getaway and 8 Days, have been canned.
"It has been agreed that production of both 8 Days and The Getaway will cease immediately due to the redistribution of resources and budget," said Sony in an official statement.
"This decision was made following an internal review of all games and it was deemed that with the incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles coming up both this year and in the near future, resource should be reallocated to enhance those projects closer to completion."
We can't say we're surprised - very little was known about either games, which were both in development at the Sony London Studio. Some screens released in May 2005 were the last we saw of The Getaway on PS3, and apart from the unveiling at E3 2006, 8 Days was reported to have been shown behind closed doors at GDC earlier this year.
"WWS has a reputation for innovative and entertaining games, with titles such as LittleBigPlanet, SingStar,Buzz, EyeToy and Eye of Judgement, and will continue to push the boundaries on all PlayStation platforms," concludes Sony.
A Sony UK representative assured CVG that both titles had been "completely cancelled", and so will not be rescued from the bin at a later date.

I'm pretty annoyed by this. 8 days really intrigued me and I probably would have stumped up the cash for The Getaway aswell.
I have absolutly no interest in LittleBigPlanet, Buzz! or any of the games mentioned in the article so the future lineup of the PS3 is considerably less attractive to me now.

Maybe Sony got scared by the success GTAIV? Getaway is a type of GTA clone and maybe Sony's team just couldn't compete or supply the resources for such a task. Let's hope something bigger and better is on the cards then.

No great losses there, Getaway would have been rendered accurately but will have behaved badly. I remember in the naivity of my youth being suckered in by the official Playstation mag's 9/10 review of the original, £40 later and it was the biggest regret of my gaming lifetime, utter sh*te.

This isn't so far fetched as you'd think, sony exagerated the specs for the ps2 by quite some margin. And i think we,d all agree that the ps3 isn't as powerfull as we would have hoped.
We must remember that sony were rushed into bringing forward the development of the ps3 by the early release of the 360 and many developers had to work on new games for the system without finalised specs.
I was really looking forward to 8 days, its one of the main reasons i bought a ps3, thats p**sed me right off.

I actually loved the first Getaway, the second was ok, still bought it and enjoyed it.
Real shame about the PS3 version, was really hoping to see this, one of the titles I was waiting for.
I wonder if GTA london is in the pipeline, would be a suitable time instead of treading the same old liberty city > vice city > san andreas route for this generation too.

Its hollywooda-PS... its not there isnt games coming to the PS3, but any games that are multi platform i'll be getting for the 360, espcially ones that have any online content. Other than MGS4 i dont have anything i want on the PS3 this year?, i remember seeing those Getaway pictures & thinking, ohh that's worth getting a PS3 for looks good!.. now its turned into one of those game Sony bates the hook with, then never delievers on!.....just like f**king Gran Truismo Mobile!!... i think that was the secret new sony ip game for 2009 which 8 days and motorstorm was also included in the same article/story
Can't say I'll miss the getaway who needs another dodgy gta clone with a c**kney underworld theme. 7 days I kinda liked the look of but kane and lynch kinda put me of that, ah well not such a big deal if you ask me.
Pretty dissapointed at that. they looked good. Some of the games they mentioned at the end dont seem all that exciting to me..

If The Getaway is your biggest gaming regret than you're truly fortunate. I rented the game and thought that while it was no GTA it was a great game. The gameplay was pretty solid and the whole thing had a more realistic approach that I could appreciate.
This is unfortunate, The Getaway was one of very few games that may have persuaded me into getting a PS3. 8 days seemed too ambitious, and realistically if they could render all those states and roads what the hell would you do in that big empty space?
While I'm no fan of The Getaway, I did like the ideas behind 8 Days and was looking forward to see how that turned out. To pull the plug on those two games is pretty big news and shows there must be some cracks beneath the surface over at Sony. I also lol'd at the part where they basically said; "it's okay though, we've got loads of amazing exclusives for this year and the next". So that's LBP and MGS4 for 2008 then... Exciting times... Looks like I'm going to continue using my PS3 as a Blu-Ray player/DVD upscaler more than a gaming console...
As long as they use the resources to get LBP as good as possible, I don't mind. Previous Getaways were awful, but 8Days sounded like a cool concept. Never mind.

C'mon, seriously. I clearly recall nobody giving a damn about 8 Days anyway. Even the loudest S.D.F. members seemed cynical when that pre-rendered movie was all we had to go on. (And that's saying something.)
For me this does nothing but show the danger in trying to create such large, super ambitious videogames. If Sony owned studios are trying to do 5 or 6 or more simultaneous titles that really use the PS3 and justify BluRay, Sony are spending an enormous amount of money on development which they are unlikely to ever recoup. Something has to give, and it looks like these are the first casualties.
I know 8 Days was a potentially fabulous title, (I won't pretend I'm at all interested in The Getaway) but many of the Sony exclusive, Sony developed games have been in production for ages now, and while Konami may have spent buckets on MGS4 (of similar/larger scope) it's the only title they're spending that much on really, and it at least has a track record/brand name to drive sales and can probably be justified in terms of budget. It's a guaranteed seller. The same can't really be said for a brand new original title, or a sequel to an underachiever like the Getaway.
I for one am quite glad that the big budget 'epic' videogame is not the only model for success, as otherwise we'd end up with only about 5 games a year to choose between. As long as there are 2 or 3 companies capable of providing a couple of those titles a year, to complement the mainstream of titles of a more modest scope, I'll be happy. If every developer starts spending 3 years on each title in a big budget game of one-upmanship, I'd seriously worry about the industry and my livelyhood as a developer!
It's all about the fun, not the number of hours play time, in my rather humble opinion!

LMAO i remember that issue then when i bought the game i wanted to smash the disc into 40 pieces cos thats how much i paid for it! but realistically looking back the Official PS mag wasnt going to slate it now was it? getaway 1 was awful i bet 2 was poor also and as for 3 it would have been getaway 2 in ps3 graphics

(As an unbiased opinion XBOX 360 WINS THE CONSOLE WAR...Far more features better online play and worth paying for mighten I add...Hopefully sony will get their act together for the next gen...Although bring on MGS4! -I have not included the Wii with by stats wins console war hands down-)

yes it is shocking that you enjoyed the first two. The first being mediocre at best and the second one was absolutely dire scoring 2's outta 10 and the less said about Gangs of London on the psp, the better.
It's about time they nailed that coffin shut on the getaway series.
It was a very nice to change to the games being constantly set in good ol' plastic america. Besides the point, I enjoyed the games because the missions were well structured and the story was usually portayed incredibly well. That's my personal opinion. Your opinion is obviously that of general reviews.
As for nailing the coffin shut. Surely that should be said about many series' of games nowadays. There's some real tosh out there The Getaway could easily beat.
The dumping or heavily postponing of games in itself is not big news, just look at the new Splinter Cell on 360.
What matters here is that PS3 still has a weaker line-up than 360 and cancelling games doesn't help. However, as these sounded like they would be mediocre at best, I don't really think anything's been lost.
What Sony need to do is hurry up with their releases. They have got a fair few games scheduled for late 08 or 09, like GT5, Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, Killzone 2, LBP, Tekken 6, Socom 4. But these need to be moved forward to this year.
Oh and GTA London would be ideally set in the 1960's, that would set it apart from the other GTA games. Music, mini's and gangsters.
Doubt they'd set it in the 60's. If they did then they would have to throw out the whole cell phone thing. Unless they found a way around it of course.

I too enjoyed the first Getaway. Loved the London setting. Loved some of it's features.
But that bloody stealth level... One of the worst gaming levels I have ever played...
Yeah, i agree. Some levels were p**s poor but some were just brilliant. I think the best bet was it actually looked like London which is more than could be said about the constant iterations of New York. It really is a shame this has got thrown put the window.
Im quite disappointed really. After MGS4 what else do i have to look forward to? killzone and resistance two games which are FPS that bore the s**t out of me at the moment.
