Metal Gear Solid 4 shattered the million sales milestone within its first week on sale in Europe, Konami has confirmed.
It also says that fans "snapped up almost immediately" the 25,000 copies of the limited edition version of the game, which packs a Making-of Blu-Ray, a soundtrack CD and action figure put out for the game's June 12 release, although the £144 bundle still looks to be in stock on Play, where it is sold exclusively over here.
Konami sales and marketing director Martin Schneider said: "The Metal Gear Solid series has again proved its huge potential, and we are delighted with the fantastic response the game has enjoyed at retail."
Schneider also promises to "keep satisfying [your] needs with updates to the game's 'Extra' option, and via new content to Metal Gear Online".
Neither Sony nor Konami have confirmed how much this has affected PS3 sales in the region, although we know it worked wonders for hardware sales in Japan. We're chasing those numbers now...

Dude, MGS4 is definately one of the best games that I've played for ages, I usually hate stealth games but this is awesome, and it features a shaved monkey!
This is definately one of the few games that makes Sony's game-playing bluray player worth owning

I played it very briefly at the weekend i must say i was pretty impressed, my friend is a total MGS nut and he was ranting and raving about everything in it but for a non MGS fan would you recommend it as it been a few years since I played the original MGS.

well shiwayb, kojima said they done what they can to let the player WHAT THEY WANT TO DO. if you dont like stealth then go for action, simple as that, why do you think they added assault rifles, rockets etc to the game? certainly it will blow the stealth away, but its up to you how you play it, some will play stealth while others play with a lot of action, i played it by killing people but try to keep a low profile at the same time, its YOU that controls the gameplay/pace, if its slow then move faster or start killing more enemies. besides if you dont like this game, then what the hell are you doing posting in here then? i dont give a c**p about what you think, at least i told you that theres more you can do than slow paced stealth play. also MGO is more action than stealth, except if your snake unless you want to gun ho around.
and yea, i noticed the £144 for the limited edition, while we paid £79.99
I would definately get it. It may be worth going on Wikipedia to fill in on some of the story that you have missed. Otherwise you will struggle with some of the story arcs. Even if you don't bother, It's a quality piece of work that the majority of people will truely enjoy.

Personally I'd go for a 360, as console is cheaper, more decent exclusives, achievements etc, what you save on hardware pays for a better online service.
Though it might be worth waiting to see what the 2.4 update brings.
If you think PS3 is the way to go then definately get MGS4, Unchartered and Ratchet & Clank
Well i'm a mild MGS fan, well was-MGS4 has got me into playing all of the MGS games. I knew little of the story but there's a lot you catch up on. It has a decent story for MGS4 too so you may just not understand what some people are going on about since it rounds off previous stories as well as playing out the story of MGS4. Nothing a bit of reading can't help though. There are various videos and articles around the internet that can get you up to date on what happened in previous games. I didn't need them though really. The long cutscenes can definitely turn people away from the game but i enjoyed them.They're interesting and the length of them really gets you involved with the characters and the game. I'd say it's not just for the MGS fans, it's an amazing game anyway, well worth a play.
StonecoldMC, i would recommend it, its an awesome game, plus if you really like the original MGS, then you'll love some parts of MGS4.
also let me put it this way, when i got GTA4, i still was on CoD4 often, but when i got MGS4, im very rarely on CoD4. so if you like GTA4, then i think you will like this.

I totally agree. I just don't like it when people slate games when they have never played them properly. It takes more than "watching a mate" playng it to truely appreciate a game.

Played it a bit, am not a stealth fan and a lot of my friends aren't either. It was OK. Though it could be the best game ever and I know I couldn't handle those cut scenes, though skipping them would mean missing the story. That would be my loss though!
Should that stop a game getting game of the year if it appeals to a smaller audience (though it's hard to tell as there is a dearth of decent stuff on PS3 so most are going to buy it)? Mind you if CoD4 can get best game of all time on the Game website, anything is possible! (Good game, but best ever?????)

I didn't think there could be a game that is this good so soon after the GTA IV release. I've played all the MGS games and was hoping for this to be good, but this game is so much better than i expected. There is so much to do, i'm now on my third play through because i really want to unlock the stealth and bandana. I really can't decide which game should be GOTY, this or GTAIV.

You are correct, there are lots of cut scenes, but until you see how brilliant they are, you really can't comment on them.
Yes you can play the game. In fact there are moments of play that are just down right supurb (motorbike ride through Eastern Europe anyone?)
That motorbike scene through eastern europe was just downrite awesome, ive never seen footage in a game like that before, only mr kojima cud pull that off, thought the scene on the river was great aswell, SPOILER , whoops may of spoiled that bit of the game for people who havnt played it yet.
I kinda agree with Shiwayb- sort of. You're kinda coming across as a fanboy though mate... and everyone else is reacting accordingly. If I owned a PS3, I'd definately get this- the adverts make it look awesome... but then I know what MGS games are like...Style over sub(sis)tance (hohoho), the 2nd one was one of the worst (hyped up)games I've played- poor controls, light weight stealth, light weight action with an almost non-sensical plot and hate inducing cut scenes... BUT from the reviews it seems they've ironed out most of these problems. And the cutscenes do look good- but am I prepared to buy a game that for a third of the time it takes to complete I'm simply watching? If only I actually knew someone with a PS3 I could at least borrow it.

I bit the bullet and bought MGS4 on day of release...that money was set aside for my petrol budget for the month but, alas.
As for recommending it...if you have the time to get engrossed in the story and to sit back comfortably to watch the fmv's then by all means get the game, it is sure to be a classic.
However, if like me you don't have too much time on your hands then I wouldn't bother. It isn't the game most Sony fanboys will have you believe it is. Gameplay is solid enough but just feels a tad gimmicky. The story does require knowledge of the previous games, but I feel reading up on it would not do this game justice. In essence, the game is dominated by its longing (imo) to be an epic silver-screen movie rather than an action video game.
Actually, I reckon I'm being too harsh with MGS4, it is great but my advice is...if you feel like you can invest the necessary time into it then take the plunge. If not...? Well I still haven't seen Godfather Part 2 and I ain't really bothered

Theres a few PS3 games coming now that im quite interested in, especially Siren, I love a good survival horror game.

Personal differences aside, titles like this have always cause petty arguments cause the people that have little to say such as the ones before are just set that its a toss game and thats that.
This was the reason I sold my 360, admittidly i have always been a big MGS fan so it was the defining title. I have nothing against the xbox as i thought it was a good console (even if it did have to go back for repairs).

I got my PS3's for Blu-Ray Movies (hence getting the American Region Coded Ones) but of course im a big gamer.
The games i am looking forward to on the PS3 are gonna be GT5 & GOD III.
Thats about it....so since ive had my PS3's not one game has been worthwhile on it.
Yes i also have 2 Wii's, A 360 Pro and a 360 Elie, A DS and a AlienWare PC.

Yes there are alot of cut scenes, personally I love them, as with all previous metal gears, think they are excellently written and directed and highly cinematic. Its what metal gear does, what it always has done. Fortunately it has gameplay just as good as the cinematics to keep the player gripped.

seriously, you are joking right. gears of war doesn't have any story. its an invasion game. go here kill that, go there kill him, drive about in a tank like thing. theres no story there at all. your talking about overhyped things then using one of the biggest overhyped games ever to compare it. as good as gears was its gets boring towards the end cause your just doing the same thing over and over again. plus you don't really feel anything for the characters. the story in MGS4, whilst being a bit long winded, is one of the best examples of story telling seen in games. yes a lot of it could be cut and if you haven't played any of the other games you may be a bit lost but damn if you know what they're talking about its sweet. its certainly my choice for game of the year so far, unless something truly epic comes out.

Thats fair doo's. If you have played them all, understood the meaning behind them etc then thats cool. Didnt know Gears was going to be a trilogy. If gear 2 can deliver anything of a half as decent story as the MG games then i'll be glad cause i felt the story in the first was shallow and driery. The end was poor and left me thinking right they arent dead, they will have revenge etc etc. I just found the whole experience really dull. It had some good ideas and tense moments such as the bezerker but not nearly enough to pull the game through. The graphics were sweet though.

You might say the story is longwinded, or could be could, and indeed it could. BUT. They decided to keep what was in the game, and a very good choice it was. you feel everything that the characters are going through. The briefings, you feel like your there. Everything just works.
Thats one thing i missed what you highlighted, gear was very much go there, kill a buch of guys, go to the next etc, and most of the battles were all the same. I hope gears 2 can make the gameplay, enemies and stratagies more varied. Which brings me onto another beauty in MG4, theres so many different tactics to take down your enemy, or if you like, just stealth it!

Sorry, after playing the game i couldn't give a rats ass where the locust came from or what emulsion was or who the queen is even if she did sound like judith chalmers. your questions don't prove squat. half your points are just standard invasion plot threads. didn't you want to know the same answers from halo. and how is there a lot to gears. you say MGS is just sneak there kill someone when there's about 4 different ways you could tackle it. sneak by without killing, sneak by and kill, kill from a distance or just go gung-ho and slaughter everyone. really all you do in gears is go there and kill people. there no change, no serious rethinking of what your doing. its all linear, one path and enemies that appear at the same place every time. dont get me wrong it was a ground breaking game but just for the graphics, the game didn't really offer us anything more than we have had from the previous gen games. the cover in gears was taken from killswitch on the ps2 and everything else was pretty much bogstandard shooting. as for online gears is flawed with the host being nearly a super shot with anything and the lancer just ruins the game. MGS online seems pretty tight to me and the codec system saves you from listening to kids swearing and telling you they pwned you or whatever the hell these wee wanks say nowadays. mind you the update downloads are a pain in the ass

no it proves that you are taken in by the shallowest of story's that your great god cliffy b probably wrote (if it was his story) whilst sitting on the pan with diahorrea from the previous nights curry. the dialogue is aimed at children and the story has no substance. if a story is good then you will give a rats ass about it. i think you'll find more people agreeing with me that the host is given too much of an advantage and that the games story is very weak. i will buy the second one as long as it introduces new features and is not just the first game with different backgrounds. but in all honesty do we see epic doing that when they can just run out copies of the same game with a few differences? yes we've all seen the meatbag move which is already in MGS4 and the brumacks are in this time but does that make the game play any different, don't think so.

It does have a brilliant story.

The host just has no bullet lag.
I prefer my Shotgun to have a tiny delay anyway.
Plus in the next one that will be sorted.

aye nae bother. grow up. didn't Lost in Translation and Titanic win awards and they are the biggest pile of s**te movies i've ever had the mispleasure of watching. gears won awards cause it looked groundbreaking at the time. compare it to the top end games coming out now and even it looks dated.

wow this has spiraled into a big ol' controversial mess. I notice alot of what the Gear fans are saying is why Gear is ace and why metal gear is w@nk.
Sure its got some questions that are unanswered. But the ones that have been listed dont really merit a trilogy. Fair enough a sequel but thats it.
Why are the locust choosing to fight? Cause they're evil mothers, simple as, just like the orcs in lord of the rings, or the nazis , theres one answered for you.
I still wouldnt call it a deep storyline, not from the first one anyway.
Gears was an invasion story, about a race taking over ours. it didnt feel like an invasion. It felt like an empty enviroment with afew locust poping up here and there, but does sound pretty good in surround sound. In metal gear (and in the cut scenes!) you feel as though your there, you feel what the characters are going through, its involving.
Dont get me wrong I have plenty bad points to say about previous metal gears, just havent found any that i dislike about 4. That goes the same for good points about Gears.
the basics behind kills in metal gear are about deciding how it best suits you and the enviroment, WITHOUT GETTING CAUGHT. Gears is balls out kill fest- which is where the two styles differ so cant really be compared on that level.
