We all know Microsoft won't comment in rumour and speculation but it looks like the publisher is readying a new Halo unveiling for E3 in a few weeks. But will it feature everyone's favourite Chief? Not so, a source tells CVG.
According to a rumour on Sarcastic Gamer, the fourth instalment is already in development: "A very good and anonymous source tells us that Halo 4 is already in full development over at Bungie." Unfortunately there was no further info available on the franchise's movements.
But we've done a little digging of our own and reckon a new Halo game could be revealed at this year's E3.
Whether or not it'll be the Peter Jackson project or the previously rumoured third-person prequel, remains to be seen. Believe us we've tried poking, threatening, starving and even tickling to find out more. But nothing...
At the end of May we revealed that, even though most of Microsoft's E3 line-up had been blown all over the internet, there were still two unknown announcements. "According to well placed sources close to Microsoft, the publisher has two more 'big' Xbox 360 games to be revealed for its 2008 line-up." We're now certain that a new Halo title is going to be one of them. Speculate below.
In other Halo news it's been revealed that the new Cold Storage multiplayer map for Halo 3 will be available FOR FREE from July 7 on Xbox Live Marketplace. Result!
I was worried about the Forthcoming 360 titles being short og big hitters.
If the is rumour is true i can forsee this game being even higher quality than the 1st hale (the best) since bungie are now going ti alone have have a name to make without m$ behind them.
Calm down fanboys Take a pill before exploding your guts onto the internet
It's still rumour, but if it's true, why are you surprised that it's not going to feature Master Chief, CVG? It should be pretty obvious they've put him to bed for a while. Although he's alive at the end of Halo 3 (Legendary after the credits), It's pretty much well known that they want to move onto something else.
Whether it's in the Halo universe or not.
Also, I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm not expecting it to have anything to do with the ring worlds - but I'm sure they'll still call it 'Halo' simply to get the sales.
Before all the Halo haters get here let me just Woo-Frickin-Hoo.
There was no way I was expecting anything like this from E3, ive heard the rumours of the 3rd person prequel but I would love to hear (see) a little bit of Peter Jacksons take on the franchise.
Of course it could all be nonsense and no Halo game will be shown at E3, but Jebus, I hope they do.
Halo without Master chief would be like Robocop without a cop, who is a robot. Crazy.
Why would it? Master Chief's story has been told for now. Halo isnt about Master Chief, it's about a very large war - of which Master Chief was just a small part.
Halo Wars tells of lots of other battles that were going on, as do the books - there is a crap load more in the Halo universe that has nothing to do with him whatsoever!
I can give further information about this rumour actually. According to an even better source, the game IS a prequel to Halo 1, but takes place just 12 months before the game.
You play as a single unit of the Flood, trapped in the Library before Master Chief gets there.
Basically you run around Library like a scrote for 12 months (real-time) waiting for Master Chief to appear.
SPOILER: The final level is Master Chief, as he runs towards you with a rocket launcher. but the game ends on one of its famous 'CLIFFHANGER' endings before you can fight him... the intention is that you can then get the original game and load up the library before beating the flood from MC's point of view.
Quite a clever idea actually and it sounds like an awesome game.
Am I the only one that actually enjoyed the Library? It was annoying that they made you go through another one in Halo 2 though.. it would have been fine had it not been such an awkward building... all that jumping over little ledges and going up cramped lifts with Flood coming through the walls.. ugh

True, but only a minority give a crap about the other stuff. MC is the poster boy for the Halo franchise and without him I struggle to believe it would sell to the masses in the same way as Halo3. Well, unless it is a Wii game, possibly titled Super Mario Warthog.

I'm still hopeful that my dream of a Halo Kart game comes true I think it would be cute having mini Warthogs, Ghosts and ATVs with tiny MC's, Arbiters, even Brutes driving them! And I had the idea just after Halo 1, not when 1UP/EGM or whoever made that list
Anyway...
I think you're underestimating the power of the title 'Halo'. People see it on shelves, they're gonna get it - they dont know if MC is in it or not. Same thing is going to happen with Halo Wars. I'm pretty sure most people that buy it wont have a clue it's an RTS.

A lot of people bought Halo 3 on the back of the hype wagon that the Halo fanboys had unleashed on to the world. I don't think another Halo game will have the market so easy next time. Oh, and if it isn't a fps, well, it will struggle even more.
A lot of people bought Halo 3 on the back of the hype wagon that the Halo fanboys had unleashed on to the world.
Exactly my point. It'll happen again and again with any Halo-named game, just like it does with GTA, Final Fantsy, Metal Gear... it's just one of those names.
I don't think another Halo game will have the market so easy next time.
Why not? It's hardly like it's got any competition in the FPS field from PS3 /jab jab

Mark has a point really as Halo 1 - 3 was just about 1 Master Chief (think his name proved to be John which was rather cool ) but the idea is there are far more of them running around. I can't remember the exact story behind it all (as in whether John was the last one left or whatever) but i know there was definitly more than one... and the whole point behind the Spartans was that they were the only one's capable of standing toe to toe with the Covenant.
I'll go out on a limb and say it's just got a differnt Spartan featuring in it... or maybe how the Spartans came to be.
Either way i'm pant-wettingly excited. Yes i LOVE Halo, i appreciate everything about it in everyway & i'd buy this game even if it came in a poo-case (as in actual poo) and a pair of tighty-whiteys that you were forced to wear whilst playing.
But the twist is that it won't feature Master Chief, we've been told.
Isn't he just a guy in a suit? I dunno, I have never played and of the Halo games myself so I have no idea.
Basically, yeah... whats your point?
He's called John (pretty sure his surname has never been mentioned). He was brought in as a kid to train to be a Spartan. It happened to thousands of kids, so he's definitely not the only one in the Halo world - but in the Halo trilogy he's one of only a very few left.

I'd love (like most Halo fans would) if it was a spralling FPS a bit like Operation Flashpoint but with less strategy and more HOLY s**t SHOOT THEM ALL, telling the story of the Fall of Reach. That's pretty much the high point in the whole story and it would be awesome to play, even though we know how it ends...
StonecoldMC: everytime I see your avatar, I get more and more hopeful for him showing up at E3.
If he doesnt, I'm blaming you for the disappointment
You cant put that kind of pressure on me, what can one man do? Actually, I think that is a line form Halo, I suppose I better get on the phone to Bungie, asap.
Can you imagine what Peter Jackson could do here though? Using his his own team at WETA, even just thinking about where he could take things gets me excited!
I'm actually pretty worried about the whole Peter Jackson thing.
Has he been involved in games before? Is it going to be called 'Peter Jackson's Halo something something'? We know how that ended with Spielberg I'm just not able to get any excitement for his 'project' yet
I think they've passed the moment for him making a Halo movie, too.

Mmmm. I am curious as to how Bungie will continue with the franchise. Personally the story means very little to me, though I enjoyed Halo 3 for what it was, a good shooter.
Also, I would be very surprised if the new game didn't incorporate some kind of motion control type shenanigans. 'Tis the future!

Sergeant Johnson: The Game. Think about it. You know you want it.
Generally Terrified Aussie Marine (who always seems to grow himself a backbone once you've blown all the dangerous s**t up with a tank/warthog/rocket launcher). The Game.
If Bungie wants me, I'm available as a creative consultant. No pressure.
Also, I would be very surprised if the new game didn't incorporate some kind of motion control type shenanigans. 'Tis the future!
God help us if that is true.....
I'm seriously hoping the motion controller is just packed in with some game and will only be used with that and nothing else, a bit like Scene It?, Buzz!, Guitar Hero etc...
It would be almost impossible for Microsoft to market it as a new controller for 360 games. If its not in there from the start, its just another optional peripheral that 99% of developers will ignore.
Generally Terrified Aussie Marine (who always seems to grow himself a backbone once you've blown all the dangerous s**t up with a tank/warthog/rocket launcher). The Game.
That guy is fantastic. I missed him so much after Halo 1... he didnt appear very much in the other 2 if I remember correctly..
Assault on the Control Room is number 1 in my list of best gaming experiences ever! The snow, the warthogs, the big battles outside, the Aussie marine screaming at everything and generally being hilarious on the back of your warthog... absolutely fantatsic. His outtakes on the Bungie site are priceless.
Silent Cartographer is an extremely close number 2!
I agree, halo 3 was overhyped and not even as good as Doom 2. Im expecting this new game to be just as rubbish and as overhyped. What does peter Jackson no about making games! lol
Halo hasnt been good since the 1st one, the rest are laughable.

I think it is time that everybody grew up a bit on here now. Stupid comments like that are so last year. Let's keep it that way, eh? And I'm not even a Halo fanboy.

chris_ace, let me ask you - did you even play Halo: Combat Evolved, or are you just using one of your 'Halo sucks' quotes from your little fanboy stash?
Do you even know what Halo's are? Without using Wiki? Seriously...
My guess is you've never even been within 10 meters of an Xbox or Xbox 360. Go away, troll.

I must say you took your time. I was expecting a rapid response not a second page effort.
Tell you what does give me a laugh though? Me and 3 friends playing through Halo 3 on Legendary with some skulls on and then watching the whole thing a gain in the Theatre, seeing what we just did from every angle possible.
Oh, and the usual folks who come on here and bash the same games over and over and over and over again. I find that f*cking hysterical never mind lol.
Lets not turn this into a fanboy war thread please folks.
Must admit i don't own a 360 and just annoy my friend for a go, and whilst i think Halo is a fantastic franchise i think its a little too soon for Halo 4. No doubt it would sell by the bucket load, but you can have too much of a good thing. If its a spin off and not going by the name Halo 4 then i'm all for it but would much prefer they took their time and made some innovations for Halo 4 and really pushed the boundaries particularly in single player mode rather than just a different characters storyline.

It's doubtful they'd go for a full-blown Halo 4 this soon. Halo 3 has only been out 9 months!

I'm sure you are right, but you never know nowadays once the powers that be thinks of the pound/dollar signs. I can't see an announcement of another Halo game before Halo Wars is even released mind.
Must be a slow day for news... It's a well known fact that Bungie have put their work on the Halo series to bed for now so they can focus on other projects. This is partly why they split from MS, as they didn't want to be pressured into pumping out Halo sequels every 2 years. If we do see a Halo game at E3, it'll either be Halo Wars or the Peter Jackson project.

Couldnt agree more, its almost as if people take delight in saying "Halo lol", this is what the big boys in the playground say so Im as big as them now.
I can honestly say that I have had more enjoyment out of Halo and its predecessors than any other game ive played (and thats a lot).
Of course people should be able to critisise a game, just do it for yourself and what you personally think of it rather than following the crowd and acting like a sheep.
What's this? Yet another amazingly witty post from the mighty Mogs?
As a massive halo fan naturally I'm looking forward to this- and it not starring the chief is a good idea. Opening up other chapters of the story and really expanding on what already is a fantastic universe. Though I do agree it needs to be something more than a FPS blammo fest- as great as Halo 3 is. In the original games you play the hard as nails bastard, maybe just playing as a marine or even a civilian as the war goes on around you- forcing you to get by with teamwork and cunning! Ooh err!
Also, I would be very surprised if the new game didn't incorporate some kind of motion control type shenanigans. 'Tis the future!
God help us if that is true.....
Haha! Motion controls would add nowt, but from playing MoH and Metroid on the Wii, the pointer/analogue stick combo kicks the s**t out of the two analogue combo.
I wouldn't mind an option for that IF MS did jump on the bandwagon
Halo without Master chief would be like Robocop without a cop, who is a robot. Crazy.
Hmmm yer i think without the chief the halo games just dont seem as good - without an iconic figure it seem pants
Be nice to see what they do imo this is whats gunna happen
The game will be set before halo and will tell the story of the covenant war - you are a lowly soldier in the army and then all hell breaks loose when some colonies get attacked by the covenant so you ae shipped off to war and then something happens and you become a genetically adapted super soldier - you become master chief
so master cheif isnt actually in the game but who he was is
The game will be set before the covenant war you are a lowly soldier in the army and then all hell breaks loose when some colonies get attacked by the covenant so you ae shipped off to war
/Every war game ever
Seriously, if it's as boring as that I wouldnt buy it!

come on please god please
That goes against the whole story though. Master Chief was John, a child that was taken by the military to become a Spartan...
Gotta say I agree that it's too early for another Halo franchise. Halo 3 was a proficient game no doubt and many of my mates swear by it. However, I have to say the series has steadily become less and less innovative in my eyes. The first Halo:CE blew my head off and actually caused me to p/x my Gamecube against an Xbox. The graphics were amazing and it was an all-round blinder.
However, the series has become increasingly less groundbreaking in my eyes. The 2nd game looked good and was something of a benchmark in online fps but technically it wasn't what Bungie had planned it to be - they even admit themselves that it was "unfinished".
Halo 3 is an awesome game I'm told but still it got creamed by a multiformat release (COD4) within only a couple of months of being released. I think MS either need to come up with a new franchise or seriously rework Halo and bring it back to what it once was (in my humble eyes that is anyway). I think they have become complacent with their winning formula and are now producing sequels rather than groundbreaking releases I'm sorry to say.
Not trying to sound like a MS hater BTW. I absolutely loved Gears and I think this is the direction they should go in - using their vast pool of money and resources to create new franchises rather than hovering over the safety-net.

English Shmuppet: Don't get me wrong, I know what you're saying, but...
Why do people think games need to be groundbreaking in order to be good?
That's like going to your favourite restaurant for 2 years and then suddenly saying 'I'm sorry, but what new stuff are you bringing to the table?' ... it's a bit ridiculous. The games do what they do best, they don't need to change their setup or bring in groundbreaking new features (although Halo 3 has quite a lot of them - just look at Forge, the Theatre, all the online community extras etc. I can't name a console game thats done any of that, especially not all in one game)
Couldnt agree more, its almost as if people take delight in saying "Halo lol", this is what the big boys in the playground say so Im as big as them now.

Pretty much bang on. What really get's on my man t**s is the lack of acknowledgment the Halo series get's. If you want to talk modern day FPS games you have to concede that Halo was a star & also that it's influence can be felt in pretty much all proceding games. It may not always have innovated, although it did certainly innovate, but it took rough diamonds & showed how they should be done.
Irrespective of the platform we should all recognise brilliance when we see it.
A child ? i thought he was taken when he was liek 19 odd
"The Master Chief, originally named John, was born in 2511 and first lived with his family on the human colony planet Eridanus II. Large for his six years of age, and approximately a foot above his school peers, he is described as a typical boy with brown hair, freckles and a gap between his two front teeth. In 2517, John and seventy-four other children his age are covertly taken from their homes and replaced with flash clones to hide the kidnapping."
Born in 2511, taken in 2517, he was 6 years old at that point.

Well my ideas out the window then - just have to be like call fo duty then your just a random soldier
just ordered the book fall of reach as i wanna know the proper back story

Correction bob, but you get that video clip of master Chief still alive and well after the credits on any difficulty!
I was addicted to Halo:CE, when Halo 2 came out, myself and 4 of my flatmates went out and bought it, 2 of them bought Xboxes to play it on and we got a HUB to connect them for 5 player LAN multiplayer.
i loved it. Halo 2 disappointed me in single player and i didn't play it through half as many times.
But... surely Master Chief is similar to Tommy Vercetti (think that was him) in GTA 3 - the non speaking main character. In Halo, you see through Master chief's eyes, he doesn't have quips etc.. so him not being in it, wouldn't really make much of a difference would it?
It's hardly like Duke Nukem without Duke in it, or Serious Sam without Sam. They add to the game with their character - master chief is just a featureless clone. surely?
"Halo: Fall of Reach" would be a cool game. Squad based combat in the Halo universe, starting off with younger Spartans in training, (and without Power Armour) who slowly get more powerful (and armoured) as you go through the game.
They could have a nice cameo from John-117 to keep the faithful happy, they could tie the story into both the books and this new RTS they're bringing out, and there would be lots of sexy Spartan armour to chuck on the box.
Thinking there won't be a Halo 4 is foolish in my humble opinion!
I want to see this quote of me saying there won't be a Halo 4. Please, I'd love to see it.
Don't put words in my mouth. I said it is foolish to simply say this rumoured Halo game that might be announced at E3, is Halo 4. Because you have no way of knowing that, and all you're doing is setting people up for disappointment.
You'd be surprised how many mindless fanboys read forums, see something like 'I think Halo 4 is at E3' and take it as 100% fact. It's where the snowball effect starts, and before you know it people are ripping into the developers for not 'delivering their promise' when they havent even said a single word.
Is this argument like saying 'A Star Wars game that didn't feature Vader, Han and Luke would suck', and then along came KotOR and blew people away... Interesting...

A Halo RPG... hmm... it has the depth in the story* but would it work as a game? Mass Effect would surely be an interesting template for it! You could be a Covenant Elite, a Brute Chieftan, a Spartan.. I think it could work I'd only buy it if they let you be a grunt though
*Calm down again, fanboys - Read the books before saying Halo has no depth

Th clip many refer to is an extended version which you see once you complete Legndary mode. It shows Master Chief's ship approaching what looks like some sort of Death Star thing. It's obvious Bungie want to continue the Halo story, but they want to take a break, focus on other properties and then return to Halo when enough time has passed for there to be a large enough jump from the last game for people to stand up and take notice. To quote Master Chief; "Wake me up when I'm needed".
I agree, halo 3 was overhyped and not even as good as Doom 2. Im expecting this new game to be just as rubbish and as overhyped. What does peter Jackson no about making games! lol
Halo hasnt been good since the 1st one, the rest are laughable.
LOL indeed
In all fairness, what did Peter Jackson know about making films before Lord of the Rings....I mean, look at his previous efforts!
After months of speculation the truth is out. The new halo game is on Microsofts new handheld! It's being announed along with it at the show, no playable code though. See yous all there.
Good point. I suppose my analogy would be a game store that sells only shooters. In the same way an Italian restaurant would serve solely Italian food, the store would sell only shooting games.
Like a guy that mainly eats Italian food I would go to the shop that mainly sells shooters. However, the restaurant would offer various different dishes within their Italian menu just as the shop would sell several different types of shooters.
In this imaginary example the game Halo 3 would be but one dish off the menu or one game out of the many shooters in the store and although I keep returning to my love of shooters/Italian I would still want some variation within that general arena - e.g. to try a new dish or buy a new shooter.
Does that make sense?
Anyways, I can appreciate the theatre mode and the various other upgrades but I just wish Halo was still pushed forward in the same way Gears was. I think if you asked somebody who didn't know the answer to guess which game came out first then they'd probably point to Gears as being more recent. To me the first Gears is kinda like what Halo was when it first came out - in terms of impact and innovation, that is, not in the actual gameplay etc.
Alternatively, you could just argue that the chef got lazy.
I could see it being an FPS involving the regular soldiers in an attempt to make it COD4ish. All FPSs will be like COD4 for awhile until people start saying "I'm so sick of modern type warfare" then it's back to WWII.

just to any haters out there... F*CK YOU, IT WILL SELL BY THE BUCKET LOAD!!! how do you like them apples??? and i shall enjoy watching you get irritated by the fact it will sell loads..
Using the other Spartan II's would be interesting, but to be honest I'd rather not play as a Spartan II again - it'd be too samey.
Another interesting possibility would be the younger Spartan III's from Ghosts Of Onyx, or as previously suggested depicting the fall of Reach. Or, UNSC marines fighting the insurrection.
I would like to see a halo game set in the book the fall of reach, just think you could be a marine, trying to get the last sparten unit aboard the pilliar of auturm, before the planet is wiped, that would be good, a new halo game dosnt have to have master cheif in it, it just has to be a damn good game set in the halo universe, after if the franchise is treated with respect, it will last a very long time and will spawn all sorts of stuff.

Really?!! Do you have a direct feed to my living room?
It may sell well but that doesn't mean it'll be any good does it so you can suck on my apples son!
I took a look at yours but unfortunately they were devoid of hair and didn't appear to have dropped yet.

I dunno...I thought The Frighteners was rather good.
If they are going to make a Halo 4 then I do hope it does feature Master Chief. He is a gaming icon, believe it or not, and I reckon Halo (FPS) would suffer without him. I am certainly not the biggest Halo fan out there but I understand the impact that Master Chief has made on a lot of people.
Have a watch of this advert/fan-made vid of the Halo 3 commercial. It is mixed and edited to follow to the theme from Alien 3 - Adagio (Masterpiece of movie soundtrack). Watch it and then try to honestly say to me Master Chief is not a legend.

He is a legend! Damn that was good!!
The thing I liked most about Halo CE was it brought story based FPS back, just when Quake and Unreal and every other FPS went deathmatch focused. Tho the series has been getting more and more deathmatch focused....
Don't get me wrong, online multiplayer is great, but a deep and involving story that lasts is just as good in my book
Never understood the hype around Halo, I completed the first one but overall I wasnt that impressed. I have not played the next so they may have bested the engine but I have no idea. It does suprise me how many rabid fanboiys there are though...

I was gonna say the same thing. Also, Heavenly Creatures, while not my type of movie, was generally received well. And hell, for what they were (blood soaked comedy horrors on a shoe string budget), both Bad Taste and Braindead were quite an achievment. And Braindead had the coolest line/scene in any movie ever too... Watch it here

Haha...ok I'll give you that - that's pretty amazing. My original point was less about the quality of his films and more about the scale and grandeur of LotR compared with his previous films. If the guy managed to set up Weta Digital, coax Lord knows how much cash out of New Line and make 3 amazing films (one of which winning 11 Oscars) given the films he had made previously, then he's more than capable of pumping out some good-quality games.
