Fears that Woolworth's recent plunge into administration would create a spontaneous price war has come to fruition, as the troubled UK retail outlet will today begin slashing all its stock prices by up to 50 percent.
Last week the retail chain fell into administration following prolonged poor financial performance in the face of global economic difficulty.
At that time numerous commentators feared that the retailer's competition would ultimately suffer from this, as Woolworths' administrators attempt to boost turnover with less of a focus on strategic pricing and more of an emphasis on removing stock and boosting turnover before the store gets acquired by another company.
Woolworths' administration group Deloitte has now revealed that it will be making dramatic (even unprofitable) cuts in its stock as of today, leaving the competition with the dilemma of either cutting their own costs or loosing business. Both actions seem unhealthy for retailers as the most crucial period of such a trying year is upon them.
"We anticipate increased footfall in the stores and have hired additional staff to cope with increased demand. Additional goods have been moved to all stores and further stock will be added in the coming days," Deloitte told MCV in a written statement.
"There is continuing interest in the core Woolworths business and the Sale will continue whilst potential buyers finalise their plans for the purchase of the business."
Dammit - my local Woolworths shut down at the beginning of the year. Still, if ileatyoualive is correct, it doesn't matter all that much - I want cheap games.
We went to Woolies last weekend and it was a f*cking nightmare. As if it wasn't pikey enough to start with (I don't know if that's just the ones we have round here or a chain thing), the price cuts mean that everyone is in there with their hordes of snotty brats, pulling things off shelves and just leaving them wherever they fall - the adults AND the kids.
The brief time I was in there - and I had to leave before I killed someone - I didn't see any game price cuts.

hahaha you're so right and I totally understand you wanting to kill people in there. i avoid shopping at all costs for those very reasons.

Its only 10% off games at the moment at my local anyway,i was hoping to get a PS3 at half price along with the Godfather trilogy on Blu Ray,i can dream.
I was at Woolies yesterday Christmas Shopping but there was noting knocked off the games, I looked at all formats too and as for Wii Games they are charging crazy prices! No wonder they're going bust! I would greatly appreciate a PS3 price cut though as my Fianceé would be over the moon with that!
i've been to 2 woolies this morning (Ashford and Folkstone) and i cant see much difference from last year sales wise and i agree with some of the above posts it is full of pikey kids and chavvy mums if woolworths is bought out its gonna need a serious facelift(just leave the pick n mix alone)

Even if every one of those items was 50% it would still be significantly more than that. The guy is either full of sh*t or the moron sales assistant rang it up wrong.
Also, who would willingly buy Wii Music? Clearly bull.
Mr dragontorc or whatever your name is, you could not talk more out of your bottom if you tried. All those games for 47 pound? p**s off mate. and how should i know? i work at woolworths in huntingdon and i can tell you for a FACT that all games hardware and software are at 10% off. the only items which are 50% are cards and some gift items. so please go and spread your s**t somewhere else.

i've not long been up your way got very drunk in cromwells my mate lives in a flat near the george hotel(i,m from the south coast)
I like how people are saying stuff along the lines of "Yeah I can't wait for Tesco to die, I'll buy my stuff from play and HMV!!" Where will you order food from, morons? Or do you all survive by eating the plastic wrapping from the games you bought £3 cheaper online?
I've been in twice. All games are 10% off and most of them were £39.99 (which ends up at about £36). You can get cheaper than that on most of the newish releases.
Pick and Mix is only 20% off.
It's good for cheap(er) Christmas presents though.

If you lie, Santa won't bring you that real copy of Wii Music you always wanted
this is b******s, i went in there and apart from all the scutty teenage pregnancy failures wrecking the place, all the games were a hell of a lot more expensive than anywhere in the high street. it seems as if woolworths have put all their prices up rather than down
