Edge celebrates its 200th issue this month with the world's first split run of 200 different magazine covers. Collect 'em all, indeed.
Celebrating videogame culture through the ages, Edge 200's covers feature all-time icons like Zelda's Link, Halo's Master Chief, Mario and Sonic rubbing shoulders with legends of yesteryear such as Dizzy, Q-Bert and Dirk the Daring.
Only 200 editions of each of the 199 different designs will be printed, with the 200th design, custom-produced for Edge by LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule, delivered exclusively to subscribers. See the epic picture of the lot on these page.
Inside issue 200, Edge identifies the 100 best games to play today, takes an in-depth look at the making of Sony's industry-changing PlayStation console, and talks exclusively to Ted Dabney, the forgotten co-founder of Atari who, after 35 years, finally tells his story.
Further interviewees in issue 200 include Trip Hawkins, who gives an insider's account of the 3DO console, and Sonic The Hedgehog man Yuji Naka, who offers his own perspective on Sega's colourful history.
Rounding out issue 200's features, four of today's key developers discuss what videogaming will be like in 2016, the year in which Edge will publish its 300th edition... (on the brain internet)
Edge's Editor-in-Chief, Tony Mott said of the occasion: "We were keen to mark Edge's 200th edition with something special, although we set ourselves a tough task in selecting 200 covers that would represent videogaming's diversity. Ultimately we're confident that every Edge reader will be able to find something among the final choices that resonates with their gaming life, and we look forward to seeing which designs prove particularly popular."
I had every issue from 1 - 100 and something. Then I got bored of their superior attitude and the Olympian way in which they reviewed games and stopped buying it. That and the fact I could get all the ganming info I need from the net. Kinda wish I didnt recycle em all now and sold em. Oh well
Whoa wonder what PCG will do for their 200th issue.
Wonder how many people will actually aim to get all 200. Haha having a complete set in a couple of years time to sell would be awesome and probably quite a money making opportunity for collectors
@robandang: quite. thanks for my cheap laugh of the day.
I've not got one issue but my uni library has loads of back issues. Have I ever picked one up? No. I don't even know why, think it's just one of those mags with an elitest rap, Games TM too. or pehaps seeing as I only have a ps3 and wii I don't need a multi-format mag.
I'm not including the Wii as a games console really
I've just found it to be a most enjoyable game, to go through all the issues in the main picture there and try to name as many of the games as possible. I got more of the old ones than I thought I would, but I did really struggle on the Speccy / C64 era ones. Whilst I am old enough to have played them, my brain is old enough to have forgotten!
I used to enjoy reading EDGE magazine, but I feel that nowadays they try to be too clever in their analysis of games and forget to actually entertain the reader.
How I miss Zzap 64! That magazine genuinely made me laugh. Other mags and journalists should really take a closer look at those older mags - if only to realise why we used to read them in the first place.
I do miss the CVG mag though. That was the closest to the old school mags that I can remember.
At then end of the day, when I read a mag/book/whatever, I just want to be entertained.

Yep. That's what I just done. I spent about 20 mins with a work colleague going through the games and trying to guess what they are. Some of the pics are just too small to get a good idea of what the games are. Was fun though

That's probably because it WAS the very first, and therefore most old school computer games mag ever!
I really miss the games mags of the early 90s especially C+VG and Mean Machines. EDGE forced all other magazines to grow up which took a lot fo the fun away.
C+VG: how about bringing back Mean Yob on this site?
EDGE think they are printing art and english literature. no wonder they cant review properly. KZ2 7/10
It isn't the scores that have ruined the magazine as they have always been a bit harsh - more so the fact that they bore me to tears.
The Killzone review was one case in point, where they waffled on and on about the story being simple. Christ EDGE, it is a game ffs! You just shoot things. A lot. Get over yourselves!
after clearing level 1 and some of 2 on elite difficulty i can say its definately more than a 7 no matter what. even if they are harsh.
the AI is very clever, really challenges you without ever feeling unfair or cheap. then are the graphics which are also amazing. i skip the story when possible but what ive seen of it is pretty garbage, with extreme and pointless overuse of the word 'fuck'. doesnt stop it from being one of the best shooters ever.

shame on that 7/10 score.
I tried multiplayer for the first time last night and absolutely loved it. The Warzone mode that changes game styles is a revelation. It plays like a more tactical COD4, which is no bad thing. The maps are of a decent size and very well designed, offering loads of scope for different players.
I particularly like the game mode where you have to collect a speaker, with the enemies leader spouting propaganda, and take it a base. Really adds to the atmosphere.
And it looks just as lovely as the single player game.
Am I the only person who agreed with their Killzone review? Yeah it looks nice but take away the shiny graphics and all you have a hodge podge of borrowed ideas and influences, with no real identity to call it's own. Decent, enjoyable, but standard FPS fair. 7/10? Spot on.
Personally I enjoy reading Edge. Admittedly it can be a little dry, but their analysis does tend to look at things from a different angle to most magazines. I get through a fair few in a month, but Edge are usually brutal and uncompromising, and I trust their scores. Even if they did give Mirrors Edge and PoP a panning.
Edge is generally quite good at hitting the nail on the head.
Modern games need to be more than just shooty shoot. If your spending that much time and effort to create realistic looking worlds you should take the time to spin a decent yarn within it.
I think there review of KZ2 summed up alot of modern gaming. Bog standard almost dull gameplay, hidden under flashy graphics. all talk no trousers.

There is nothing dull about the extremely clever Helghast. In fact, I'd go as far as saying they show more intelligence than the EDGE reviewers.
And EDGE's biggest problem is that the majority disagree with their views. Furthermore, Killzone 2 seems to be doing quite well for itself.
Edge tell it like it is and thats a good thing. Gamecentral on channel 4's teletext service are the same, they also gave killzone 2 a 7/10. I'm enjoying the game but it reminds me of unreal 2, stunning graphics, but seen it all before gameplay. It's no call of duty 4 thats for sure.
Aye, I think that Edge hit the nail on the head with that 7/10 but then again I don't think that's a bad score, that means that it's doing nearly everything right but is being held back. That's a good score, I'd be happy to 70% in an exam, how about you?
This old chestnut - from the same 2 people who kicked off in the review's comments.
Retrospectively, I think 7/10 was probably a bit generous for KZ2. It's a decent game, but I'll not be playing it in a months time.
The AI was utterly demolished by FEAR2's only last month, the Helghast are positively stupid in comparison (but still better than most FPS games).
I think Edge picked up on the lack of excitement, creativity and direction more than the naff story and pre-teen dialogue that you have pointed out, although they were all characteristics.
As a reader from issue one I can honestly say I wouldn't wipe my ar5e with EDGE these days. Too many freelancers. Irratic scoring. Dull lightweight review writing. Dated graphic design and pointless industry b******s send me to sleep.
If I want to read some clever inspiring journalism I'll read The Word or The Guardian
Is it just me that finds their articles increasing childish these days? It's like listening to a 16 year old trying to impress you with fancy words he's picked up from reading his dad's copy of the Financial Times.

Says a guy who more than likely never played it.
I'm as old school as anyone when it comes to gaming and Killzone 2 is wicked (if quite generic - plot wise its certainly not Half Life 2). MP is a blast, second only to Gears of War 1&2 in my book.

Well it's all pointless opinion, isn't it? Like how I thought that Fear 2 was pish. Better AI? No. Just no.
Great mag. and integrity that doesn't pander to the hype and fanboy nonsense, telling it how it is.
If you don't want honest reviews or get hurt if someone doesn't agree with your latest "world beating game" then don't read it, or better still try reading the f**king Beano!

you played it then?
Not yet, I want to try it out though but from what I've heard it ranges from Really good to Brilliant but I don't think anyone's said it's perfect. Then again 70% might be low but Edge don't do decimals so it might be a bit higher than 70%.
The trouble with the Edge reviews is the perception of most gamers that 7/10 is a an average game. 5/10 is an average game for Edge with 7/10 being a good game.
That's not to say they've produced some proper stinking reviews over the years:
To Vampyre: GTA 3 did get a 6/10, but it was a printing error. The month after there was a retification that GTA 3 scored an 8/10. It was a very small artical so you probally missed it.
But your right. I used to read CVG magazine all the time, but got fed up when the changed the look. I loved to read the reviews from Ed Lomas en Paul Davies. EDGE is much more serious but I trust their reviews more then other magazines who have an exclusive review but didn't even complete the game! EDGE plays every game to the end and then judges a game.
That being said, EDGE 10/10 for Halo is something I don't understand even to this day. I love FPS's but what in Jesus name is so special about Halo? But anyway, love all the covers. My book agency will probally wil have some of the naff ones...
Not that I care particularly about the pretentious tripe dished out by Edge, would anyone care to have a stab at naming all 200 cover games? Some have me stumped! I could probably look the list up on the web, but where's the fun in that?
By the way, the Final Fight cover has me dreaming of a Final Fight HD, like the Street Fighter remix. That. Would. Rock!

Speaking of Elitists... I'd have thought Edge would be right up your alley.

That explains a lot, I could never understand why it scored so lowly. Around that time I hadn't bothered buying it for a few years so just flicked through it in Smiths whenever one was out of the plastic bag
Been a subscriber for a couple of years now and I'm still clinging onto my Issues 1-40. Nice to know they're worth something, TBH it's never occurred to me to check on flea-bay!!
Just got this months issue and its not bad with some good articles. There is a nice top 100 games to play now piece and a good interview with Yuji Naka from Sega. Not many reviews but Resi 5 gets the Edge treatment and gets a 'Killzone 2' 7.
I'd just like to point out that I am not a huge fan of EDGE but my (ex) girlfriend saw me reading one once and decided to by me a 2 year subsription for my birthday. I only wish she saw me reading Penthouse or Razzle instead!
Wow, i don't think there are enough Mario & Zelda covers there. Seriously, both are industry defining titles but for 11 out of 200 covers to be devoted them seems a bit much when there are so many other gaming icons that have been left out. Cant see any Lara Croft, anything from Warcraft, anything from Final Fantasy 7, Pac Man even?
Also as to the KZ2 Review - what did Killzone do that Halo and HL2 hadn't already done? yes its a good FPS, But its hardly rewritten the rule-book has it. and i think that's the point.

Yup, it's a quality mag. mate!
But the strangely named Scottish guy is right about the "Razzle" bit... top-shelf raincoat material apparently!! Not that I'd know of course!

Be interesting to see what their top 100 is again. What's the odds on Ocarina being number one?
EDGE did not give GTA3 6 out of 10, they gave it 8 out of 10.
We've already sorted that one. In the original review it was given a 6, an issue later they declared it a misprint and should have recieved 8. I only read the original issue.
Damn I didn't know you could tell what cover you're getting by checking the back, I got the Assassins Creed one. I was hoping for Shadow of the Colossus.

Sorry I didn't read the entire thread, I was sure I had the original issue and it said 8 though, but maybe it was one of those collections of reviews they do and they had changed the score to 8.
